Wow, these past few days have been absolutely nuts for anyone following the Western Conference playoffs. The Spurs pulled off a miracle without Wemby, the Lakers stole a game without Luka or Reaves, and the Timberwolves kept rolling even after losing Ant early. What in the world is going on out here?
As a longtime Spurs fan, I’ve been on one heck of a rollercoaster. It started with our superstar living out the rarest of basketball nightmares—falling flat on his face after a scary spill. The Spurs dropped that game at home, one ESPN had them winning with a ridiculous 98% chance just minutes earlier. Then came the waiting game: how long would Victor miss with that concussion? Would his youth beat the usual seven-day recovery timeline, or would crashing from over seven feet up make it worse?
I even daydreamed about renting an RV to drive him to Portland (Google Maps quickly killed that idea with a 31-hour haul). We were all relieved when he made the team flight and looked sharp at shootaround, draining threes and joking with the guys. My hopes for him playing Game 3 jumped from near zero to maybe 20%, but the smart call was to hold him out.
Personal sidebar: I couldn’t watch Game 3 thanks to some unrelated travel drama and terrible Wi-Fi. Sneaking peeks at the score on spotty connections, it looked tight early, then the Spurs were down 14 late in the third with Portland sitting at an 87.5% win probability. I spent the next few hours mentally scripting the rest of the series—Victor maybe back for Game 4 at 50/50, the Spurs probably dropping to 3-1 down, and our magical season turning into one of those “what if” stories.
Then I got home, checked the score expecting the worst… and saw a Spurs win! All those doom scenarios vanished in an instant. Best late-night phone check ever. I slept like a baby and was way better company on our family flight to Mexico City the next day.
But the Spurs’ shocker wasn’t the only weirdness in that 24-hour window. The Lakers erased a six-point deficit in the final minute of regulation to beat the Rockets in overtime, grabbing a 3-0 series lead—without Luka Doncic or Austin Reaves. Nobody had that on their bingo card.
And on Saturday, the Timberwolves grinded out a victory over the Nuggets despite losing two starters in the first half, including Anthony Edwards. Ant dodged serious ligament damage but is sidelined for weeks. Donte DiVincenzo looks like he’s dealing with a torn Achilles—out for the long haul, maybe even next season. Yet out of nowhere, Ayo Dosunmu exploded for 43 points off the bench on ridiculous efficiency (13-17 shooting, perfect from the line and three), lifting the shorthanded Wolves to a 3-1 lead.
In less than a day, the Spurs went from staring down a potential 3-1 hole and a brutal path through Denver and OKC… to sitting pretty at 2-1 with a suddenly vulnerable Wolves squad possibly waiting in the wings for the Western Conference Finals.
To top it all off, we crushed some chorizo, guacamole, and grasshopper tacos that night. Like I said—an odd few days. Can’t wait to see what fresh weirdness Game 4 against the Blazers brings.
