Why did she set her Mom up Like this

Posted on April 11, 2026

In the small, sunlit kitchen of a modest house in Bac Ninh, Vietnam, where the smell of phở broth lingered from breakfast and the ceiling fan spun lazily overhead, Lan Nguyen had always been the “good daughter.”

At twenty-four, she was the one who sent money home every month from her office job in Hanoi, who called her mother Bà Hoa every Sunday without fail, who brought gifts for Tet and helped with the garden when she visited. Bà Hoa, sixty-two and widowed for a decade, lived alone in the family home, tending to roses and complaining about the neighbors. Everyone in the village said Lan was lucky to have such a devoted daughter.

But Lan had been carrying a secret for three years.

It started innocently enough. Bà Hoa kept asking when Lan would “settle down.” Every phone call ended with the same questions: “When will you bring a husband home? When will I have grandchildren? You’re not getting younger.” The pressure built slowly, then all at once. Lan started lying—small lies at first. “I’m seeing someone.” “He’s very busy with work.” “We’re taking things slow.”

Bà Hoa lit up. She told the neighbors. She told her friends at the market. She began planning a wedding in her head.

Lan didn’t correct her.

She let the story grow.

She invented a boyfriend named Minh—smart, kind, works in IT, from Hanoi. She sent fake photos (a coworker’s cousin she cropped carefully). She sent voice messages of “Minh” saying hello (a male friend from university who owed her a favor). She even mailed a small engagement ring to her mother as a “surprise gift from Minh” so Bà Hoa could show it off.

For three years, Bà Hoa lived in the glow of an upcoming wedding. She bragged at the temple. She saved every đồng for a dowry she insisted Minh would never accept. She talked about grandchildren every single Sunday call.

Lan kept feeding the lie.

Until the day Bà Hoa called crying with joy.

“Lan, my girl! Minh just called me himself! He said he’s coming next month to ask for your hand properly. He wants to meet me first. Oh, I’m so happy I could die right now!”

Lan sat on her apartment floor, phone pressed to her ear, and felt the weight of three years crash down.

She whispered, “Mẹ… there is no Minh.”

Silence on the other end.

Then Bà Hoa’s voice—small, cracked: “What?”

“There never was. I made him up. I didn’t want you to worry about me being alone. I didn’t want the questions every week. I thought… if you believed I was happy, you’d stop asking.”

Bà Hoa didn’t speak for a long time.

When she finally did, her voice was thin as paper.

“You let me dream for three years. You let me tell everyone my daughter was getting married. You let me buy fabric for a wedding áo dài I’ll never see. You let me pray for grandchildren that don’t exist.”

Lan started crying. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know how to stop it. Every time I tried to tell you, you sounded so happy. I didn’t want to take that away.”

“You took more than happiness,” Bà Hoa said. “You took my trust. You made me a fool in front of everyone. I bragged about a wedding that was never real. I cried tears of joy over a lie.”

Lan sobbed into the phone. “Mẹ, please—”

“No,” Bà Hoa said quietly. “Don’t call me for a while. I need time. I need to mourn the daughter I thought I had.”

She hung up.

Lan sat on the floor for hours, staring at the wall.

The next week, she tried to call. No answer.

The week after, she sent money. Bà Hoa sent it back with a single line: “Keep it. Buy yourself something real.”

Lan never told anyone why her mother stopped speaking to her. She carried the guilt alone.

Because the cruelest setup isn’t the one you plan for someone else.

It’s the one you build for the person you love most—brick by brick of lies—until the moment they realize the entire foundation was fake.

And sometimes the person who destroys the relationship isn’t the one who leaves.

It’s the one who stayed silent while the dream grew too big to survive the truth.
