US Women’s Hockey Delivers Epic Comeback: Defeats Canada 2-1 in Overtime to Win Olympic Gold

Posted on April 25, 2026

In a thrilling, back-and-forth battle worthy of the sport’s greatest rivalry, the United States women’s hockey team staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Canada 2-1 in overtime, capturing the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The final at Santagiulia Arena lived up to every bit of the hype. Canada struck first early in the second period when Kristin O’Neill capitalized on a rare defensive lapse to give the defending champions a 1-0 lead. For the first time in the tournament, the Americans found themselves trailing.

But this young, resilient U.S. squad refused to fold. With just over two minutes left in regulation, 22-year-old star Laila Edwards fired a hard shot toward the net, and legendary captain Hilary Knight deftly redirected it past the Canadian goalkeeper to tie the game at 1-1. The building erupted as the game headed to overtime.

The momentum stayed firmly with Team USA in the extra session. Just over four minutes in, defenseman Megan Keller made a brilliant individual play, weaving through the Canadian defense before firing the game-winning shot to secure the 2-1 victory and Olympic gold.

This triumph is the result of a bold youth movement the Americans have embraced in recent years. With an average age under 27 and several college players stepping into starring roles, the U.S. showed remarkable poise and depth throughout the tournament.

For Canada, the loss stings. The four-time Olympic champions entered with a veteran-heavy roster and a long history of dominance, but the balance of power has clearly shifted in recent matchups.

The win carries extra meaning for Hilary Knight, who may have played in her final Olympics. Her tying goal gave her 15 career Olympic points, setting a new U.S. women’s hockey record.

“I don’t even know how to describe this feeling right now,” forward Hayley Scamurra said after the game. “This is what we’ve chased our whole lives. This group is truly special.”

Teammate Kelly Pannek added: “In my opinion, this is the best women’s hockey team in history. Every single player knew her role and executed it perfectly — whether it was scoring, killing penalties, or capitalizing on power plays.”

After years of heartbreaking near-misses, the United States has finally reclaimed Olympic glory on the biggest stage. A new chapter has been written in one of sport’s most intense rivalries — and this time, the gold belongs to Team USA.
