Trump Tells Iran “Pick Up the Phone” for Negotiations as Tehran’s Foreign Minister Heads to Russia

Posted on April 27, 2026

President Donald Trump has extended a straightforward invitation to Iran amid the ongoing two-month conflict: if Tehran wants to talk peace, they can call anytime — but nuclear weapons remain a hard red line.

Speaking on Fox News’ “The Sunday Briefing” on April 26, Trump said, “If they want to talk, they can come see us or just call us. We’ve got phones, and we have secure lines.” He stressed again that any deal must ensure “they will never have a nuclear weapon — otherwise there’s no point in meeting.”

The comments come as diplomatic efforts appear to be stalling. Trump canceled a planned trip by envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Islamabad, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi shuttled between Pakistan and Oman before flying to Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Iran has demanded the lifting of U.S. port blockades and recognition of its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes. The U.S., however, continues to press for the complete dismantling of Iran’s nuclear ambitions, an end to support for proxy groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, and secure maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite a fragile ceasefire, tensions remain high. The U.S. Navy has been clearing mines in the strategic waterway, while Iran has effectively closed parts of the strait. Both sides continue naval operations, with American warships maintaining a strong presence in the region.

Araqchi’s trip to Russia underscores Tehran’s push for international backing. Iran’s ambassador to Moscow described the visit as part of efforts to counter “totalitarian forces” and Western dominance, framing it as a united front with Russia.

Trump faces growing domestic pressure to end the unpopular war, which has driven up global oil prices and inflation. Iran, though militarily weakened, still holds leverage through its control over key shipping lanes.

No immediate breakthrough is expected, but both sides appear to be keeping channels open through intermediaries. As Trump put it, the ball is now in Tehran’s court — all they have to do is make the call.
