An “amazingly talented” teenage girl died after a tragic car crash while traveling with friends to see the pop band The Vamps.
Elise Thomas, 17, from Driffield in East Yorkshire, lost her life following a crash on the M1 near Wakefield.

Some Call Her ‘The Owl Whisperer’
Elise was in the front passenger seat of a Ford Fiesta when a front tire began to fray and came off. Moments later, another vehicle collided with the back of their car on August 12, 2023.
The impact caused the Fiesta to spin sideways. Elise suffered life-threatening injuries and passed away in hospital six days later. One of her friends, also a passenger, was seriously injured.
Details of the heartbreaking incident came to light during a trial at Hull Crown Court. The group had set off early that morning from Dewsbury, excited to see The Vamps in Doncaster – a band they all loved and followed.
While overtaking a truck on the M1, the Fiesta made a rumbling sound as the front tire detached. The driver pulled over in lane three, but traffic continued rushing past at high speed. About 29 seconds later, a silver Vauxhall Corsa crashed into the rear without braking.
Both drivers escaped the wreckage, but Elise and her friend had to be helped out by passing motorists before emergency services arrived. Elise sadly died on August 18, 2023.

Following her passing, Elise’s family shared a touching statement: “Elise was a beautiful soul. She was an inspiration to others and was amazingly talented with her photography. Even at such a young age, she was successful. Everything she touched turned to gold.”
Her main passion was wildlife photography, and she also enjoyed crafts. Friends and family continue to remember her bright spirit and creative gifts.
The driver of the Corsa was cleared of the charges during the trial. Tributes have highlighted Elise as a kind, talented young woman whose love for nature and photography left a lasting impression on everyone around her.
