THE ROCKET SAYS NO: Ronnie O’Sullivan Snubs Champion of Champions Invitation, Sparking 'Waxgate'-Style Controversy Over Entry Criteria

The Champion of Champions—one of snooker’s most prestigious events—was rocked by two major controversies ahead of the November 10th start: first, the legendary Ronnie O’Sullivan unexpectedly declined an invitation; and second, his decision exposed a messy, last-minute criteria change that initially threatened to exclude World Seniors Champion Alfie Burden.

The Champion of Champions is an exclusive, invite-only tournament in Leicester, featuring only 16 players who have won major events over the past year. O’Sullivan, who has not won a ranking event since March 2024, did not qualify the normal way but was offered a spot via the World Rankings, as the organizers sought to secure snooker’s biggest draw.

Despite his unmatched record at the event—four titles and six finals—O’Sullivan declined the invitation. His decision was based on his stated plan to play only three major UK events this season: the UK Championship, the Tour Championship, and the World Championship. Even a special invitation was not enough to sway his selective schedule.

The twist was that the criteria change to bring O’Sullivan in caused a major problem. Organizers planned to use a highest-ranked player spot for Ronnie, seemingly pushing aside the established tradition of inviting the World Seniors Champion.

Initial Exclusion: Alfie Burden, the World Seniors Champion, was initially left off the list, despite a contractual agreement confirming his spot since 2019.

Fan Outcry: World Senior Snooker Tour runner Jason Francis publicly fought the decision, exposing the “misinformation” and confirming that Burden had a “contractual right” to be on the invite list.

The Twist: After all the internal fighting and controversy caused by the organizers trying to accommodate him, Ronnie said no anyway, sticking to his three-tournament schedule.

This is not the first time O’Sullivan has skipped the event, as he is highly particular about his schedule at age 49. His decision comes on the heels of recent vocal complaints about “terrible” humidity and playing conditions at a tournament in China, which prompted the World Snooker Tour (WST) to issue a public rebuttal defending the quality of the tour’s conditions.

In the end, the issue was resolved. The final player field was confirmed with both Jack Lisowski (Northern Ireland Open winner) and Alfie Burden (World Seniors Champion) securing the final two spots. Though the process was “messy,” creating confusion and frustration for players and fans alike, the roster was ultimately filled by 16 champions, including defending champion Mark Williams and top stars like Judd Trump and Shaun Murphy.

The entire situation exposed the opaque and often late process of setting the Champion of Champions’ criteria, which is run by Matchroom MultiSport, not the WST. It highlighted the enormous drawing power of O’Sullivan—to the point where organizers risked violating contractual agreements just to secure him—and reinforced his status as the sport’s only player who can successfully dictate his own highly selective schedule.

The “messy” invite process, compounded by the dramatic snub, has left many questioning the tournament’s organization. While O’Sullivan focuses only on the UK Championship, Tour Championship, and World Championship, the controversy serves as a cautionary tale for organizers who risk prioritizing star power over contractual integrity.
