Tahlia's Story: Overcoming the Odds and Finding Strength in Research 5939

At the tender age of 12, Tahlia’s life took an unexpected turn when she sustained a severe scald burn injury to her foot. The injury occurred while she was helping out in the kitchen, rinsing containers for the recycling.

In an unfortunate accident, Tahlia poured hot water from the kettle into a Nutella container, which immediately melted from the heat. The container tipped over and landed on her foot, spilling the scalding water and pooling inside her shoe. The pain was instant, and Tahlia cried out in distress. Her sister Kelsey was the first to respond, quickly removing Tahlia’s shoe and releasing the scalding water.

Their mother, Candice, rushed in, her first instinct to place Tahlia in the bath and administer first aid by holding her foot under cool running water. While Candice wasn’t initially sure whether to call for an ambulance, she knew she had to act quickly. After checking the Health Direct website, she followed the burn care guidelines and called an ambulance, knowing that the size and severity of the burn required immediate medical attention.

Tahlia was rushed to the Perth Children’s Hospital emergency department via ambulance, where it was confirmed that she had sustained significant blisters from the burn.

The medical team worked quickly to treat her injuries, and as part of her treatment, Tahlia was offered the opportunity to participate in a research study investigating the types of proteins present in blister fluids. This marked the beginning of Tahlia’s involvement in research studies aimed at improving burn treatments for future patients.

Following her treatment in the emergency department, Tahlia was discharged and became an outpatient of the Burns Unit, returning every two to three days for dressing changes and monitoring.

However, a week into outpatient treatment, the family received difficult news: part of Tahlia’s skin had died and wasn’t responding to treatment. Tahlia was admitted for skin graft surgery, during which a piece of skin from her lower bottom/thigh was used for the graft.

The surgery was a success, but to ensure proper healing, Tahlia was made non-weight bearing for over a week, using a wheelchair and crutches. Tahlia, ever the fighter, joked about being “literally kicking arse,” maintaining her sense of humor through the difficult process.

After the surgery, Tahlia returned to the Burns Unit for her follow-up appointment. When the bandages were removed, both Tahlia and her mother, Candice, were initially unsure about the appearance of the graft. However, the medical team reassured them that everything looked great, and from that moment, Tahlia’s journey continued with frequent outpatient visits for dressing changes and massages — an important part of the burn recovery process.

As part of her treatment, Tahlia worked with a team of doctors, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, surgeons, and nurses. Once the scar healed sufficiently, Tahlia was fitted with a special compression sock garment, which she had to wear 24 hours a day for eight months.

While she was initially thrilled when she was told she no longer needed the garment, Tahlia also felt nervous. The garment had become a safety net for her, and she had grown attached to it as part of her healing process. It took a few weeks for Tahlia to adjust to life without it, but she gradually regained confidence, knowing that she wouldn’t cause further harm.

Today, more than a year later, Tahlia’s scar looks incredible. To those who don’t know her story, it’s hard to believe she ever sustained such a severe burn. The recovery process was long and difficult, but Tahlia has never let her injuries stop her from doing what she loves. She had to take a break from sports and other activities for about six weeks, but once she was cleared, she returned to the Netball court and resumed her favorite activities without any issues.

Tahlia’s most significant achievement, however, has been her involvement in various research studies aimed at improving burn treatment. The most notable of these studies is the Biobank study, which explores how burn injuries interact with individuals and how this research could lead to enhanced treatments for future burn patients.

Tahlia believes that her participation in these studies is her way of contributing to the ongoing advancement of burn care, helping ensure that future patients will benefit from the discoveries made through research.

Tahlia’s story is one of strength, resilience, and determination. Her journey from the moment of her burn to her ongoing recovery shows just how far she’s come. Her commitment to her own healing and her desire to help others have made her a true inspiration to everyone who meets her. Tahlia has shown that even in the face of unimaginable pain, there is always room for hope, healing, and a brighter future.
