Suspected Hantavirus Cases on Atlantic Cruise Ship Leave Three Dead and Others Ill

Posted on May 4, 2026

At least three people have died, and three more have become sick following a suspected outbreak of hantavirus—a rare virus typically spread by rodents—on a cruise ship sailing in the Atlantic Ocean. The World Health Organization is assisting with the evacuation of those showing symptoms from the vessel.

This image shows the cruise ship MV Hondius, currently positioned off the coast of Cape Verde.

Key Details The incident took place aboard the Dutch-flagged MV Hondius, which left Argentina several weeks ago. South African health authorities reported that a 70-year-old Dutch man was the first to pass away, with his body taken off the ship at Saint Helena island in the South Atlantic. His 69-year-old wife later died in a South African hospital while trying to return home to the Netherlands. A third person who died remains on board.

A 69-year-old British passenger is receiving intensive care in Johannesburg, South Africa, after falling ill on the ship. This individual is the only confirmed hantavirus case so far, with lab tests and investigations continuing for the others. Two crew members also need urgent medical attention, according to the ship’s operator, Oceanwide Expeditions.

World Health Organization Response The WHO has acknowledged the situation and is carrying out detailed lab testing and epidemiological reviews. Hantavirus infections are generally linked to contact with infected rodents or their droppings, though person-to-person spread can occur rarely. The organization is helping to medically evacuate two symptomatic individuals, performing a full risk assessment, and providing support to those on board.

Statements from the Cruise Operator Oceanwide Expeditions noted that the ship is anchored off Cape Verde. Local authorities there have visited to check on the two ill crew members but have not yet permitted disembarkation for medical care or screening. The company is focused on getting prompt medical help for those affected, with Dutch officials coordinating efforts to bring the symptomatic passengers home safely.

This situation highlights the importance of monitoring health risks during international travel, especially in remote ocean environments. Investigations are ongoing to determine the source and prevent further spread.
