Snooker Legend Stephen Lee Rules Out Comeback as Historic 12-Year Ban Ends

Former snooker world number five Stephen Lee has made his current intentions clear regarding a return to professional competitive action, despite his unprecedented 12-year ban concluding on October 12th, 2024.

Lee, who turned 50 on the day his ban expired, was suspended from the sport in October 2012. He was found guilty by a tribunal of influencing the outcome of seven matches between 2008 and 2009. The investigation revealed he was working with multiple betting groups to manipulate exact scores and frame outcomes for financial gain.

The governing body’s head of disciplinary stated at the time that the 12-year suspension was effectively “a life ban” due to the immense difficulty Lee would face in returning to the elite level after such a long absence.

The former Welsh Open winner has given conflicting statements about a potential return over the years.

Earlier Ambivalence: In 2022, Lee noted he was constantly asked about a comeback. He said he was “still capable of playing,” but acknowledged that his eyes were “getting worse” and the “determination and the fire goes” as he got older. At the time, he stated a decision was “not a no, and not a yes.”

The Final Word: However, Lee has more recently appeared to definitively rule out a playing comeback, stating publicly: “Not a chance of it my friend. I struggle to break off nowadays. It’s down to my son [who plays amateur snooker] now…” He also clarified that he has busy ventures in Asia, where he resides, and has “zero interest” in the World Snooker Tour.

Regardless of his personal feelings, a significant financial barrier remains that prevents Lee from rejoining the professional structure:

Outstanding Debt: Lee owes the sport’s governing body a substantial sum of £125,000 in legal fees related to the court cases and his unsuccessful appeals from a decade ago.

Conditions for Return: A spokesperson for the governing body confirmed that Lee would need to reach a satisfactory agreement over the settlement of these costs before he could play in any official events.

Due to this unpaid debt, Lee is currently ineligible to participate in mandatory professional qualifying events, such as Q Tour, Q School, and the WSF Championship, making a return to the main tour practically impossible.
