She Threw a Bomb While He Slept—He Woke Up Without a Hand, A Relationship That Ended in Devastating Injury

Posted on April 28, 2026

The case did not start with a blast. It began with a relationship that had been quietly unraveling for some time.

In Deer Park, New York, prosecutors say 35-year-old Keyonna Waddell turned a strained partnership into an act of serious violence—one that would leave her boyfriend with life-changing injuries.

On March 22, 2024, the couple had an argument inside his apartment. Things grew heated, and he asked her to leave. He eventually stepped out himself to create some space. When he returned later that night, the place was quiet and she was gone. Thinking the conflict had passed, he locked the doors and went to bed.

But while he slept, prosecutors say a lit explosive device—described as resembling a stick of dynamite—was thrown into the bedroom. He woke up suddenly to the threat and grabbed the device on instinct, trying to throw it out of the house to protect himself.

He never made it to the door. The device exploded in his hand.

The blast caused severe damage. Doctors had to amputate his hand and part of his arm to save his life. Bleeding and in shock, he made it out of the house and down the driveway. That’s when he reportedly saw Keyonna Waddell leaving the area—information that became key to the investigation.

Officials say this was not random. There had been earlier threats involving dynamite. What might have once seemed like heated words took on new weight after the incident. Prosecutors described it as a deliberate escalation from arguments to dangerous action.

The case went to trial in Suffolk County. The jury heard details about the sequence of events, the nature of the device, and the history between them. After weighing the evidence, they found Keyonna Waddell guilty of first-degree assault and first-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

The verdict was formally delivered on April 24, 2026. She now awaits sentencing on May 27 and could face up to 25 years in prison. Prosecutors called it a calculated act that caused lasting harm and could have been fatal.

For the victim, the impact goes far beyond the physical. Everyday tasks have changed, and the road to recovery involves both medical care and emotional adjustment after such a sudden and violent moment.

Incidents like this often bring up hard conversations about recognizing warning signs in relationships and when repeated threats need to be taken seriously. What started as an argument ended in an explosion that altered a life in an instant.

As the case concludes in court, one question remains difficult to shake: were there clear signals along the way that, if addressed sooner, might have prevented that terrifying night?
