The Pittsburgh Penguins refused to go quietly, battling back from the brink to keep their playoff hopes alive with a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night at PPG Paints Arena.
With the series on the line, the Penguins (now 3-3) delivered when it mattered most, earning a crucial victory that sends the Eastern Conference matchup back to Philadelphia for Game 6 on Wednesday night.
The game opened with a bang for Pittsburgh. Elmer Soderblom dumped the puck in, Anthony Mantha chased it down, and fed a beautiful backhand pass to a streaking Soderblom. The young forward dropped to one knee and ripped a wrist shot past Flyers goaltender Dan Vladar for a 1-0 lead just 2:45 into the first period.
Pittsburgh carried the momentum into the second period. After cycling the puck deep in the Flyers’ zone, Sidney Crosby intercepted a clearance attempt and quickly found Connor Dewar breaking into the left faceoff circle. Dewar’s wrist shot beat Vladar cleanly, giving the Penguins a 2-0 advantage.
However, the Flyers pushed back hard and narrowed the gap. Despite Pittsburgh blowing a two-goal lead and missing chances to salt the game away with an empty net late, veteran defenseman Kris Letang stepped up once again with the game-winning goal — his second straight contest-winner.
Goaltender Arturs Silovs stood tall in net for the Penguins, making several key stops especially late in the first period when Philadelphia generated heavy pressure.
The win evens the best-of-seven series at 3-3 and shifts all the momentum back to the road for Pittsburgh. The Penguins now have a real opportunity to advance, while the Flyers will look to close things out at home in front of their passionate crowd.
