At birth, Paisley’s parents immediately noticed something alarming—her lips were turning blue. Concerned, they rushed her to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where a thorough evaluation revealed that Paisley had multiple congenital heart defects, as well as a rare condition known as heterotaxy syndrome.
Heterotaxy syndrome is a complex condition in which the organs in the body do not develop in the usual mirrored pattern, causing significant complications in the heart, lungs, and other organs.
For Paisley and her family, this diagnosis was a difficult one to process, but they were determined to stay hopeful and trust in the expertise of the medical team at Children’s. From the beginning, Paisley’s care team was there, offering support, information, and the best possible care to help her face the challenges ahead.
Paisley’s journey took her through three major surgeries, each one a critical step in repairing the heart defects caused by her condition. The first surgery focused on her patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) artery, a condition where a blood vessel that should close after birth remains open, affecting blood flow.
The second procedure, the Glenn procedure, was performed to reconstruct the top of Paisley’s heart and ensure that blood could circulate more effectively.
