Our 4-Year-Old Daughter Died in a Crash That Left Me Paralyzed – But a Miracle Surrogate Is Giving Us Hope Again

Posted on April 29, 2026

A brave couple who lost their young daughter in a tragic car accident six years ago is now seeing light at the end of a long tunnel, thanks to a generous family member stepping up as a surrogate.

Dani and Dan Elm’s world shattered in October 2018 when a split-second mistake on the road claimed the life of their bright four-year-old girl, Darcy. The devastating crash also left Dani, a former nail technician and children’s entertainer, with permanent disabilities including a brain injury and spinal cord damage. But after years of searching, Dan’s cousin Paris Smith has offered to carry their next child, bringing fresh optimism to the family.

Dani, 38, shared her excitement: “I would love to say that by Christmas 2028 we’ll be parents again. It’s up to mother nature, but it truly feels like it’s within touching distance.”

Dan, 40, a plumber, was behind the wheel during the journey from their home in Swanage to visit family in Wales. The car ran out of gas and stalled across the fast lane, where another vehicle struck them at nearly 70 mph. Little Darcy suffered a fatal neck injury and passed away en route to the hospital. Dani sustained serious injuries, while Dan broke his pelvis and several ribs.

The couple joined Surrogacy UK in 2020 after learning Dani could not safely carry another pregnancy. They faced a failed embryo transfer in 2023, but in February, Paris, 23, a full-time mom of four from Melksham, Wiltshire, reached out. She plans to begin the surrogacy process once she is six months postpartum with her youngest.

Paris explained her decision: “They had lost their daughter in an awful car accident and then were unable to have any more children. I feel that they deserve to have a family of their own. It will be the most amazing gift I could give to them both.”

Darcy is remembered as a clever, typical little girl who loved reading, playing with dolls, and her family. The Elms cherish memories like annual butterfly releases at her gravesite on her birthday. Despite the unimaginable pain, the couple has stayed strong together, even renewing their wedding vows after Dani’s hospital discharge.

Dani now uses a wheelchair with 24-hour care and a tracheostomy but remains positive: “Life isn’t simple. It’s difficult. But it could have been a hell of a lot worse. The fact that I’m alive is quite amazing.”

The pair created embryos using donor eggs and are grateful for this new chapter. Dani recently published a book, Our Last Steps, with proceeds supporting local causes and child bereavement charities. She hopes it will help others facing similar challenges.

Dan looks ahead with excitement: “When we look to the future now, I see a child running around our house, giggling and laughing… It’s been a long slog for the last six years, but right now feels very exciting indeed.”

To hold Darcy’s brother or sister would be a dream come true for the family – a symbol of hope after profound loss.
