Twenty years have passed since the Smiths famously merged their professional and personal lives. They have officially “retired” from the kill-for-hire business, settling into a hyper-stable, suffocatingly mundane suburban life complete with carpools, book clubs, and home renovations. Their marriage is stable, successful, and slowly driving both master assassins clinically insane. Their greatest fights now revolve around whose turn it is to do the dishes, and their passion has been replaced by passive aggression.
Their boredom explodes into life when their estranged, ambitious, and highly effective daughter, Eve Smith (Florence Pugh), unknowingly accepts a massive contract to kill… her own parents.
The twist is a lethal knot: Eve, who believed her parents were a boring, successful contractor and a corporate consultant, has no idea that John and Jane were the two greatest assassins in global history. Likewise, John and Jane have spent twenty years assuming Eve was a brilliant, but harmless, art history major, with no clue that she has followed directly in their lethal, highly covert footsteps.
The moment the first automated turret pops up in their carefully manicured lawn, the retirement plan is terminated. Forced to dust off their forgotten arsenals, reactivate their old contacts, and come out of hiding, John and Jane must dodge every deadly attack launched by their own daughter.
The film is a dizzying mix of high-stakes action and domestic dysfunction. John and Jane must teach the next generation a harsh lesson in survival—which quickly devolves into bickering over tactical superiority in the middle of high-speed chases and arguing about Eve’s poor trigger discipline while repelling a paramilitary assault on their home. They are assisted (and occasionally confused) by a returning, familiar handler (Adam Brody).
