IDAHO — A disturbing case involving the alleged rough handling of a one-week-old infant has led to felony charges against a 26-year-old mother in Idaho.
Authorities say Brenwyn Richey is facing a charge of injury to a child after multiple witnesses reported seeing her shake and jolt the newborn in a manner they described as violent and dangerous. The incident reportedly occurred in late December at her apartment.
Witnesses told police they observed Richey grabbing the baby by one leg without supporting her neck, allowing the infant’s body to dangle, and shaking her forcefully. One account described the shaking lasting five to fifteen minutes at a time until the baby stopped crying. When confronted, Richey allegedly responded that the baby was “not made of glass” and that “people do it all the time.”
Medical examinations of the infant reportedly revealed bruising, swelling, and internal signs consistent with trauma. Richey was later interviewed by police and allegedly demonstrated how she would bounce the baby forcefully.
The felony charge of injury to a child carries serious penalties, including the possibility of up to 10 years in prison if convicted. As with all cases, Richey is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
This heartbreaking situation has drawn attention to the extreme vulnerability of newborns and the critical importance of gentle care during the earliest days of life. Witnesses who came forward played a key role in prompting the investigation and ensuring the infant received medical attention.
