Mother Accused of Leaving Three Children to Die in Fire While Allegedly Buying Drugs

Posted on May 15, 2026

The fire tore through the Erie apartment so rapidly that by the time neighbors noticed, thick smoke had already engulfed the building. Outside, panic erupted as flames shot through windows and terrified screams echoed through the neighborhood. Inside the burning apartment, three young children were trapped behind blocked exits, while firefighters battled desperately to reach them in time. What rescuers discovered that night would leave even experienced emergency crews shaken long after the flames were extinguished.

On March 29, 2026, firefighters and police responded to a residential building in Erie, Pennsylvania, following reports of a severe apartment fire with children trapped inside. Witnesses described chaos on the streets as smoke poured from the building and neighbors anxiously tried to determine whether anyone had survived. Fire crews arrived prepared for a challenging rescue but immediately faced obstacles that slowed their critical response.

Investigators reported that the apartment’s entrance was blocked by large pieces of furniture. A mattress obstructed part of the stairwell leading to the children, and a couch had been pushed against an upper doorway, creating a barricade. Firefighters had to battle through these obstructions while flames and smoke intensified around them. Every second counted, and the blocked entries turned the rescue into a nightmare scenario.

Inside the apartment were 5-year-old Tobias Ya’Shan Lee Huff, 3-year-old Da’Liyla Lelona Huff, and 5-month-old Amirah Al-Mansouri. The children had been left alone as the fire spread. Firefighters eventually entered through a secondary doorway, but by that time, the apartment was already filled with lethal smoke and heat.

Rescuers carried the children from the burning apartment in a desperate bid to save them. Tobias and Da’Liyla were rushed away but tragically could not be saved. Baby Amirah initially survived and remained hospitalized in critical condition for several days. On April 3, authorities confirmed that she had also passed away, marking the fire as a tragedy claiming all three siblings.

Attention quickly turned to the children’s mother, Danozjna Shalita Marjie Williams, as investigators reconstructed the timeline. Court documents and statements revealed that Williams had left the children unsupervised for a long period before the fire. Her initial account to police did not match evidence collected from surveillance footage and witness statements.

Williams claimed she had been gone for roughly five minutes, stating she had made a quick trip to Walmart. Surveillance footage, however, suggested she was away for nearly 50 minutes, leaving the children alone. Further investigation indicated that she may have traveled to Corry, Pennsylvania, to conduct a drug transaction involving around $300 worth of heroin or fentanyl. While these allegations were noted in court, Williams has not been charged with drug offenses directly related to the fire.

The blocked exits horrified investigators and the community. Emergency crews described the difficulty of pushing past furniture while attempting to reach the children. In fires, even seconds can mean life or death, particularly for young children in enclosed spaces. The mattress and couch obstructing escape routes raised serious questions about how the children could have survived once the fire spread.

Neighbors reported hearing frantic shouts and watching firefighters work urgently to force entry. Some residents attempted to alert others nearby as smoke thickened throughout the building. The scene became increasingly heartbreaking as the reality that multiple children remained inside became apparent.

The deaths of Tobias, Da’Liyla, and Amirah shocked Erie County. Community members expressed grief and outrage over the circumstances. Vigils and memorials were quickly organized once the children’s identities were made public.

Photos of the siblings circulated online, showing smiling faces now frozen in time. Social media filled with messages mourning the children and demanding accountability. Many questioned how three young children could be left unattended for so long in an apartment where exits were blocked.

Cases of child neglect connected to substance abuse often reveal hidden, devastating patterns. Addiction can consume a parent’s decision-making, endangering children. In this case, prosecutors believe the mother’s absence directly led to the tragic outcome.

Williams was arrested by the Erie County District Attorney’s Office and remains in custody. Authorities continue reviewing evidence, including witness statements, surveillance footage, emergency response timelines, and the apartment’s condition. Prosecutors will likely emphasize how long the children were left alone before the fire.

The tragedy has reignited discussions about child safety, parental responsibility, and the link between addiction and neglect. Fire experts note that young children in burning homes have only moments to escape before smoke inhalation becomes fatal, especially when adults are absent and exits blocked.

For the families mourning Tobias, Da’Liyla, and Amirah, legal proceedings cannot undo the loss. Three children who should have had full lives instead became victims of a preventable tragedy. The image of firefighters forcing their way past a mattress and couch while the children remained trapped continues to haunt the case.

As the investigation continues, one harsh reality remains: while emergency crews fought desperately to save the children, their loved ones are left facing a different kind of pain — the unbearable grief of wondering whether those lives could have been saved if someone had simply stayed home.
