Milly’s story began under the most challenging of circumstances. Born at 35 weeks at Derby Royal Hospital, Milly’s parents had no indication of the life-threatening condition that would define her early years.
Her diagnosis, right-sided Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH), was not detected during any of the ultrasounds throughout the pregnancy, despite four potential signs during the 20-week scan that went unnoticed. It wasn’t until after her birth that the shocking reality set in, and the road ahead would require both immense strength and unwavering faith.
Just hours after Milly was born, doctors struggled to stabilize her tiny body. The medical team was faced with an agonizing decision: turn off the machines or continue to fight for her life. For Milly’s parents, the answer was simple—keep fighting. They refused to give up on their daughter, determined to give her every possible chance to survive. Against all odds, Milly’s condition improved, and she was transferred to Glenfield Hospital in Leicester for surgery.
Milly’s condition was critical, as her bowels and liver were pushed into her chest cavity, severely restricting the growth of her right lung and putting pressure on her heart. Miraculously, her heart showed no complications, and she did not require surgery to address any cardiac issues.
But her road to recovery was just beginning. Milly was placed on ECMO, a life-support system that temporarily took over her heart and lung function, and remained on it for ten days. Afterward, she was transferred to Leicester Royal Infirmary, where surgeons attempted to repair the hernia.
However, the road to recovery was anything but straightforward. Milly’s hernia repair was not a one-time procedure. The material used by surgeons to patch the hole in her diaphragm kept tearing, delaying her healing. After several failed attempts, they decided to use pig skin as a patch, but that too failed. Finally, the medical team used a material similar to bowel tissue, which, after four years, has remained in place and is hoped to last for the rest of her life.
As if the hernia wasn’t enough of a challenge, Milly also faced complications due to the condition of her bowels. Since most of her bowels had migrated into her chest cavity, they had died. The doctors were frank with Milly’s parents, explaining that she only had a 10% chance of survival. That heart-wrenching conversation only spurred her parents’ determination to see their daughter through.
The doctors tried an innovative method of placing Milly’s bowels outside of her body in a plastic bag for 24 hours, hoping to see if any movement would begin. Miraculously, movement began, and the team was able to remove 55% of her bowels, which gave her a fighting chance.
After spending seven long months in the hospital, Milly was finally discharged, a small but mighty survivor. The journey wasn’t easy, and it wasn’t over. In fact, not long after her discharge, Milly’s story caught the attention of medical professionals who were so moved by her courage and determination that they requested to include her story in a medical book. Milly’s parents were honored to share her story with the world, knowing it might inspire others who were facing similar struggles.
Fast forward to today, and Milly is now nine years old. She lives with right-sided cerebral palsy as a result of her early medical complications but refuses to let it define her.
