It was a sign that something was terribly wrong, and the medical team wasted no time moving me to the operating room, where I was quickly put under general anesthesia, leaving my husband behind, helpless in the waiting room.
Millie was born at 9:33 AM on June 4th, weighing just 2530g, a little over 5.5 pounds at 41½ weeks. Despite the challenges, she began to breathe well on her own, but within the hour, she started having seizures. The doctors were alarmed and called the Life Flight team, who arrived to transport her to the intensive care unit at Wellington NICU.
The news was overwhelming—Millie had been admitted with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), possible sepsis, and meconium aspiration. The entanglement of her umbilical cord had likely caused her small size and the lack of oxygen, but we still didn’t know how severe the damage was or what her future would hold.
Millie was placed under induced hypothermia cooling treatment for 72 hours, a procedure designed to protect her brain from the effects of oxygen deprivation. Each moment was a test of our endurance as we waited anxiously for the MRI results that would determine the extent of the damage. It was a terrifying time, but the team at the NICU kept reassuring us with their care and their commitment to helping Millie fight for her life.
Those three days felt like an eternity as we waited in fear, unsure of what the next steps would be or how much we would lose in the process. The hospital became our home, and the doctors and nurses became our support, keeping us grounded during the most uncertain period of our lives.

At 4.5 months old, Millie is a thriving, happy baby. She smiles, laughs, and lights up the room with her joy. Her journey has been nothing short of a miracle, and we are incredibly grateful for every moment we get to spend with her.
