Mitch Marner delivered a standout performance as the Vegas Golden Knights advanced in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, recording three points (two goals and one assist) in a 5-1 Game 6 victory over the Utah Mammoth. The win sent Vegas into the second round against the Anaheim Ducks.
Sitting on the podium as the first star of the night, Marner reflected on the moment. “I think this is what I hoped for, for sure, an opportunity to do something special,” he said. “Like I said when I first got here, I knew it was a special group.”
After nine seasons with his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs, where he posted strong regular-season numbers but faced playoff scrutiny, Marner joined the Golden Knights via sign-and-trade in the offseason. He signed an eight-year, $96 million deal and stepped into a veteran lineup with plenty of playoff experience, including two Stanley Cup wins in recent years.
The transition brought challenges — new city, new teammates, and even new positions, including time at center. Under new coach John Tortorella, Marner adapted while contributing in different roles. He finished the regular season with 80 points (24 goals, 56 assists) in 81 games and earned praise from management for his overall impact.
Stepping up when it counted
Marner had three assists in the first four games of the series but turned it up in Games 5 and 6 with four points total. In Game 5, he won a key puck battle on the penalty kill to set up the game-winning short-handed goal in double overtime. In Game 6, he assisted on an early goal, then scored twice — including one that capped a dominant shift by the Knights.

“Yeah, it was his best game of the series,” Tortorella said. “He just looked comfortable. … Mitchy has been doing a lot of little things people don’t understand, some small little plays, but he had some big plays tonight that everybody could see. Really good for him for his confidence going into the next series.”
Marner highlighted the team effort, noting how all four lines contributed at different moments. Captain Mark Stone emphasized the Golden Knights’ experience and composure, saying the group stayed calm through adversity and bounced back strongly.
For Marner, this run represents a fresh start and the chance he was looking for. With more hockey ahead, the focus now shifts to the next round and continuing to build on this momentum.
