Lake Havasu City Police Conclude Investigation into Darrell Sheets’ Self-Inflicted Death

Posted on April 23, 2026

Lake Havasu City, Arizona — Following a comprehensive investigation, the Lake Havasu City Police Department has officially ruled the death of longtime local resident Darrell Sheets as a self-inflicted gunshot wound, closing the case with no indication of foul play.

According to police reports, officers were dispatched to a private residence in Lake Havasu City shortly after 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, in response to a welfare check that quickly turned into a death investigation. Upon entering the home, first responders discovered Sheets, a 68-year-old man known to many in the community, deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Detectives from the Lake Havasu City Police Department, in coordination with the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office, spent several hours processing the scene. Evidence collected at the location, including the positioning of the firearm and absence of defensive wounds or signs of forced entry, supported the initial determination of suicide. The official autopsy report released Thursday morning confirmed the cause of death as a single gunshot wound and the manner of death as suicide.

“While every death investigation is treated as a potential homicide until proven otherwise, all available evidence in this case clearly points to a self-inflicted injury,” said a department spokesperson. “Our thoughts are with Mr. Sheets’ family and friends as they navigate this tragic loss.”

Darrell Sheets had lived in Lake Havasu City for over two decades and was remembered by neighbors as a quiet, private individual who enjoyed boating on the lake and spending time outdoors. No further details about his personal life or any possible motives have been released by authorities, as is standard in suicide investigations to protect the privacy of the family.

The Lake Havasu City Police Department has reminded the community that help is available for those struggling with mental health challenges. Local resources include the Mohave County Crisis Line and the national 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which offers 24/7 confidential support.

The investigation is now officially closed, and no additional updates are expected.
