Key Questions That Will Decide the Winner of This Thrilling Raptors-Cavaliers Series

Posted on April 29, 2026

There’s something special about playoff series filled with unknowns, and the first-round clash between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors has delivered plenty of excitement. The two teams bring very different styles: Toronto’s aggressive, versatile defense paired with a creative half-court offense, versus Cleveland’s high-powered, star-driven attack that can also deliver strong defensive moments.

The series is now tied 2-2 heading into a pivotal Game 5, turning this best-of-seven into a best-of-three battle. Early regular-season meetings offered little insight since key players were often missing, so both sides have had to adjust on the fly.

Can the Cavaliers get their pick-and-roll game back on track?

Cleveland excelled at generating efficient offense through pick-and-rolls during the regular season, especially after adding key pieces. In their wins, they created favorable matchups for Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, using smart spacing and secondary actions to keep the Raptors guessing.

That changed in the last two games in Toronto. The Raptors made smart adjustments — upsizing with defenders like Ja’Kobe Walter on Mitchell and Scottie Barnes on Harden, while RJ Barrett took on bigger assignments. They also adjusted their pressure points, making it tougher for Cleveland to run their favorite sets. Pick-and-roll efficiency dropped noticeably, turning some possessions into tough slogs.

To flip the script, the Cavaliers may need more Ram screens (where bigs screen for each other), better transition play, or early offense looks to disrupt Toronto’s defense.

Will Brandon Ingram find his rhythm?

Ingram has the ability to take over games as a scorer, but this series has been challenging. Cleveland has defended him physically off the ball, and help defense has limited his drives. He’s leaned heavily on midrange shots as a result.

The Raptors can help him by creating easier touches in transition, using back screens, or flat spacing for isolations. If Ingram starts knocking down his jumpers consistently, it could give Toronto the half-court boost they need.

Other factors to watch

  • Possession battles matter: In Cleveland’s wins, they controlled turnovers and rebounds. Toronto did the same in their victories. Second-chance opportunities, like those from Collin Murray-Boyles, have been huge.
  • Lineup tweaks: How the Cavaliers handle Toronto’s effective Barnes-Murray-Boyles combinations could be key.
  • Jaylon Tyson’s impact: His shooting, defense, and athleticism have grown in recent games and could be a swing factor in small lineups.

This series has been full of adjustments and big moments, with everything still up for grabs. Game 5 will likely come down to which team executes better in these critical areas.
