At 28 weeks pregnant, Megan never expected the sudden shock that would change everything. What started as what she thought was a bout of the flu—achy all over—soon turned into something far more intense. As she noticed unusual fluid loss and painful contractions, she initially dismissed them as Braxton Hicks. But this wasn’t a false alarm. It was time for her son, Jimmy, to make his way into the world.
Despite their best efforts to stop the labor, Jimmy was determined to arrive. The next 15 hours, spent in the hospital, were filled with anxiety and uncertainty as Megan prepared for an emergency C-section. She had no idea that the journey ahead would be so challenging, yet so filled with moments of love and bonding that would forever shape their story.
The moment Megan first saw Jimmy was unlike anything she had imagined. Instead of the typical newborn in her arms, she was met with a tiny, fragile baby placed inside a plastic bag to keep him warm—something she hadn’t expected, and it was a sight that took her completely by surprise.
Jimmy was quickly whisked away to the NICU, where he was placed on breathing support. Although he was diagnosed with a pneumothorax, he was otherwise in good health. The relief Megan felt at that moment was immense, but it was only the beginning of a long and emotional journey.
On day two, Megan was finally able to hold Jimmy, and his siblings were able to see him in his incubator. It was a small but important milestone in their NICU journey, and it meant the world to Megan.
After being discharged from Queen Mary Hospital, Megan stayed with Jimmy in the NICU, despite having never spent more than a few hours away from her then-two-year-old. The adjustment was difficult for all of them, but it was necessary. Megan was determined to stay close to Jimmy, especially since she couldn’t drive after her C-section and lived an hour away from the hospital.
Being able to spend so much time with Jimmy in those early days was invaluable. On average, Megan spent about 10 hours a day holding him once he was strong enough for skin-to-skin care. She believes this bonding was essential to his recovery, along with the incredible support from the NICU nurses who helped them every step of the way. Their unwavering support gave her the strength to keep going.
However, the road to recovery wasn’t without setbacks. In week two, Jimmy was diagnosed with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a life-threatening condition that left Megan feeling helpless as her son grew very unwell.
Thanks to early intensive care, Jimmy managed to recover without surgery—a miracle that Megan is endlessly grateful for. Along with NEC, Jimmy faced challenges with weight loss, lines, and a bit of gas on his liver. The frequent scans, blood tests, and emotional rollercoaster brought tears to Megan’s eyes more than once. But she never gave up.
During his NICU stay, Megan was able to spend five nights at home, taking breaks to recharge, but always with one goal in mind: to help Jimmy thrive. When he was on an NG tube, it was tough, but they pushed toward the goal of having him tube-free. Megan made sure to be there for every wake and, to her joy, Jimmy took to breastfeeding beautifully. As time went on, their daily goal was to “chunk up,” helping him gain strength and health.
After six weeks in the NICU, Megan and her partner finally got to bring Jimmy home—a moment of pure joy, relief, and triumph. It wasn’t the start they had imagined for their baby, but it was a beginning that made every moment since even more precious. Their bond was stronger than ever, and the memories they had made in the NICU would stay with them forever.
Now, at eight months old (five months corrected), Jimmy is absolutely thriving. He is over 8kg, transitioning from breastfeeding to solids, and meeting all of his developmental milestones. He is his māmā’s boy, with his dad’s cheeky sense of humor and the light of his siblings’ eyes. The family’s gratitude for Jimmy’s recovery and the incredible care he received in the NICU knows no bounds. They will always hold those special memories, especially with the dedicated NICU nurses who not only cared for Jimmy but also supported the entire family through their emotional journey.
