Around 11:50 a.m. on March 20, officers responded to a call at Springshire Court near Sunnybrook Road. They found a teenage boy inside the house suffering from a gunshot wound. He was quickly rushed to the hospital, where medical teams fought hard to save him. Despite their best efforts, he passed away from his injuries. Family identified him as Cayden Alston, also known as Cayden Alston-Arnold—a bright 15-year-old whose life was just beginning.

According to his father, Courtney “CJ” Alston, the trouble began when Cayden tried to sell a pair of jeans. Two boys came to the house, but the deal fell apart. They wouldn’t pay, and Cayden wouldn’t hand over the jeans. What should have stayed a small disagreement turned serious in a flash.
“I literally told Cayden the night before, ‘They can’t come back over here. You can’t have no company,’” his father recalled. But the next morning, they showed up anyway. Doorbell camera video captured the moments leading up to the incident, showing the boys walking around the back of the house and asking about Cayden’s window. They arrived at 11:36 a.m., and within 15 minutes, police were on the scene.
When Cayden stood firm and refused to give up the jeans without payment, one of the boys pulled a gun and shot him right there in his own home. What followed was something his father says will stay with him forever. Cayden didn’t go down right away—he tried to keep moving, fighting to survive. Traces of blood showed he had run through the house, from the bathroom to the closet and into the kitchen.
“Cayden was in here running around, trying to clean up his own blood… everywhere,” his father said, painting a painful picture of a young boy battling for his life in those final moments. At the hospital, doctors worked tirelessly, even repairing his heart. But it wasn’t enough. “They managed to sew his heart back together, but it just wouldn’t start beating,” Alston remembered.
Cayden was his only child, and the loss feels complete. His father described him as a loving, outgoing kid who cherished time with family and friends. He dreamed of playing basketball and living a full life—dreams now gone. “What I’ll miss most is his face, talking to him,” he said. “Cayden was my only kid.”
The pain runs deep, not just from what happened, but from what might have been different. “I wish I could have been there to assist him,” he added. “It just hurts. I can’t believe this is happening.”
The investigation continues, with authorities filing a juvenile petition against the suspect. Due to the suspect’s age, no name has been released. While the legal process moves forward, nothing can bring Cayden back.
