On February 26, Grace made her entrance into the world, and for an hour, everything was perfect.
Her birth was uneventful, and we spent that first peaceful hour bonding, holding her close for skin-to-skin contact. In that moment, all our dreams for our sweet girl were alive and well. But in an instant, that peace was shattered.
It began with a routine check.
The nurse noticed her oxygen levels were low and heard a loud heart murmur. Moments later, we found ourselves surrounded by doctors and nurses as an x-ray revealed something unexpected—Grace’s heart was enlarged. That discovery led to an echo and, just hours after her birth, a helicopter ride to UNC Chapel Hill for immediate care. We didn’t know it at the time, but our world was about to change forever.
A cardiologist quickly informed us that Grace’s heart wasn’t functioning as it should.
She had been born with dilated cardiomyopathy, a rare condition in which the heart becomes enlarged and cannot pump blood effectively. After further tests, we learned that the cause of her condition was likely a non-inherited gene mutation. She was in heart failure, and we could only wait for answers.
Our journey had only just begun.
We were transferred to Duke University Hospital, where Grace was officially listed for a heart transplant. We were overwhelmed with fear, but we had a tiny glimmer of hope—a transplant could save her. Forty-five days later, that hope was realized when Grace received her new heart. But what made this transplant even more special was the unique way it happened.
Grace was part of a domino transplant—a relatively new and innovative procedure pioneered at Duke.
Her heart wasn’t functioning properly, but her valves were in excellent condition. With our consent, those valves were donated to another heart warrior, JR. The timing of this donation was serendipitous, as JR had previously missed out on an earlier offer that would have given him a heart. Thanks to the heart that Grace received, JR was able to receive her valves, and this domino transplant helped two families in one extraordinary act of kindness.
It was a beautiful and bittersweet moment for us.
What initially seemed like heartbreak—the loss of Grace’s original heart—became a moment of profound meaning. We got to know JR’s family through a small-world connection, and their gratitude for the timing of the transplant filled us with even more appreciation for the miracle we had just witnessed.
After receiving her heart, Grace’s recovery was nothing short of miraculous.
She was finally home, a new chapter beginning for our family. But even with the joy of being together again, we couldn’t forget the four months we had spent in the hospital. The time we spent in the ICU was difficult, but it also brought us so much more.
We became a family with the amazing staff at Duke and the other families who were there alongside us. Those families—fellow heart warriors—remain part of our lives.
As I sit on the couch today, holding my sweet girl in my arms, I can’t help but reflect on the long road that brought us here.
It’s easy to write this with a smile on my face, knowing that Grace is thriving and doing so well, but the journey was never easy.
There were moments filled with tears, anxiety, and uncertainty. There were long, sleepless nights filled with fear. We’ve witnessed firsthand the heartbreaking reality that not all stories have happy endings.
But through all of it, we are endlessly grateful.
We are thankful to the incredible team at Duke—our PCICU and transplant teams—who worked tirelessly to save Grace’s life. They showed us compassion, understanding, and dedication in moments where we feared the worst. We are also eternally grateful to the donor family who made the selfless decision to give Grace the opportunity to live. Their pain became our hope, and for that, we will always carry them in our hearts.
We’ve learned so much on this journey.
We’ve learned the power of love and hope. We’ve learned the importance of staying strong in the face of adversity. Most of all, we’ve learned to cherish every single moment. Every smile. Every milestone. Every giggle.
Grace is a testament to resilience.

Her strength, her spirit, and her light are a beacon of hope for everyone she meets. She is truly a miracle, and we are so blessed to be her family. We’ve been through so much, but we’ve come out stronger and more connected than ever before.
Today, Grace is thriving.
She’s a testament to the power of science, compassion, and the kindness of others. She’s growing stronger every day and continues to make us proud in ways we never thought possible.
Grace’s journey has taught us that life is fragile, but it’s also full of possibility.
As we look ahead to the future, we remain hopeful and grateful. We know that Grace will continue to overcome every challenge and defy every odd. And we’ll be there every step of the way, cherishing every moment we get to spend with our beautiful heart warrior.
