Fresh blow in Nancy Guthrie hunt as Mexican authorities say they aren’t searching for Savannah’s mom

TUCSON, Arizona / HERMOSILLO, Sonora — Mexican authorities say they are not actively searching for missing Arizona woman Nancy Guthrie, pushing back on reports that the investigation into her disappearance has expanded across the U.S.–Mexico border.

Officials in the northern Mexican state of Sonora — which shares a long desert frontier with Arizona — confirmed they have received no formal request from U.S. law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, to assist in locating the 68-year-old retiree who vanished from her Tucson-area home on Feb. 1.

The statement adds new confusion to a case already marked by conflicting leads, viral speculation and mounting public anxiety as investigators acknowledge they still have no identified suspect despite DNA evidence, surveillance footage and thousands of tips.

In a written response, the Sonora State Attorney General’s Office said it has “not received a formal request for collaboration, assistance, or information sharing from U.S. authorities or Mexican federal agencies in relation to this case.”

“Should an official request be received through the appropriate institutional channels,” the agency added, “it will be addressed with full cooperation and within the framework of its legal powers and existing cooperation mechanisms.”

The clarification is significant because multiple U.S. media reports had suggested the FBI was pursuing leads in Mexico, including a possible cross-border movement of Guthrie shortly after her disappearance. Those reports fueled public fears that the case had become an international kidnapping investigation.

Mexican officials’ denial suggests that — at least formally — the probe remains centered in Arizona.

The Sonora statement followed claims that federal investigators had contacted Mexican authorities regarding a potential “purchase” tied to the case. According to a Mexican security official cited in U.S. reporting, that lead has already been ruled out by the FBI.

Separately, celebrity-news outlet TMZ reported receiving what it described as a ransom message alleging Guthrie was being held “south of the border.” Law-enforcement sources have not authenticated the note, and investigators have publicly treated it as unverified.

The FBI has not confirmed any active search in Mexico. Meanwhile, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, which is leading the case, said it has found no evidence Guthrie was transported out of Arizona.

Sheriff’s officials emphasized that cross-border speculation remains unsupported by current facts.

Guthrie disappeared from her home in the Catalina Foothills area north of Tucson during the evening hours of Feb. 1. Surveillance video later recovered by investigators shows a masked individual approaching her front door while carrying what appears to be a firearm.

Authorities believe Guthrie opened the door voluntarily, suggesting she may have recognized or at least felt safe with the visitor. She has not been seen or heard from since.

Her car remained at the residence, and there were no immediate signs of forced entry, struggle or theft — details that early on led investigators to consider the possibility of a targeted abduction.

In a major development announced this week, the sheriff’s department said forensic teams recovered previously unidentified biological material inside Guthrie’s home during a renewed search of the property.

Investigators confirmed the DNA does not match Guthrie and is now undergoing laboratory analysis. Officials declined to specify the type of material — such as blood, skin cells or hair — citing evidentiary sensitivity.

The discovery could be pivotal. Detectives are working to determine whether the DNA belongs to the masked figure seen on video, a known acquaintance, or an unrelated individual who had legitimate access to the home.

Authorities cautioned that DNA results alone do not establish guilt and may take weeks to process, compare and interpret.

Despite intense public attention and widespread media coverage, investigators say they remain without a confirmed suspect. The case has generated thousands of tips from across the United States and abroad, overwhelming call centers and investigative teams.

Many tips, officials say, have proven irrelevant or unverifiable, illustrating the challenge of separating actionable intelligence from rumor in high-profile disappearances.

Search efforts in the Tucson region have included ground sweeps, aerial surveys and neighborhood canvassing. None have produced confirmed sightings or physical traces outside the residence.

The disappearance has drawn sustained national attention in part because Guthrie is the mother of broadcast journalist Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of NBC’s “Today.” Family members have made repeated public appeals for information while urging restraint in spreading speculation.

Relatives say Guthrie had no known enemies and lived a quiet life in retirement. Friends described her as socially active, organized and unlikely to vanish voluntarily.

Law-enforcement officials have not publicly discussed possible motives.

The Arizona–Sonora border region has historically been relevant in some missing-person and kidnapping investigations due to its proximity and cross-border travel routes. Tucson lies roughly an hour’s drive from the international boundary.

However, experts note that formal international investigative cooperation typically requires official requests through federal channels — the absence of which, in this case, suggests the probe has not yet met that threshold.

Mexican authorities emphasized they remain willing to assist if asked.

Detectives say several key questions remain unanswered:

Who was the masked individual at Guthrie’s door?

Was Guthrie specifically targeted?

Does the unidentified DNA belong to the suspect?

Did Guthrie leave the residence alive?

Are there undiscovered witnesses or surveillance recordings?

Officials continue to request doorbell-camera footage, neighborhood video and information about unfamiliar vehicles in the Catalina Foothills area on the night of Feb. 1.

As of this week:

No suspect identified

No confirmed sightings after Feb. 1

No verified ransom communication

No evidence of cross-border transport

Unidentified DNA under analysis

International search not formally requested

Authorities stress the case remains active and evolving.

The contradiction between public reports of an international search and Mexico’s statement denying any request highlights the uncertain terrain investigators are navigating — a case driven by fragmentary evidence, viral claims and intense public scrutiny.

For now, the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie remains unsolved. Officials say the newly discovered biological evidence offers the most promising lead yet, but whether it will identify a suspect — or deepen the mystery — is still unknown.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department tip line.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. exposed Senator Elizabeth Warren for accepting over $850,000 from pharmaceutical companies during a Senate Finance Committee hearing.

Kennedy, serving as Secretary of Health and Human Services under the Trump administration, confronted Warren directly after she questioned his credibility and pharmaceutical connections.

He responded by pointing to her campaign contributions, stating, “You’ve taken $855,000 from pharmaceutical companies.”

The exchange came during a tense back-and-forth in which Warren attempted to position herself as a watchdog over the health sector. Kennedy did not let the opportunity pass. He cited campaign finance data from OpenSecrets, which tracks donations from individuals in specific industries, including pharmaceuticals.

Though Warren did not deny the amount, she deflected Kennedy’s claim by pivoting to his past controversial remarks. Conservative sources quickly highlighted the moment, with Fox Business reporting that Warren had received over $5 million from the broader healthcare industry during her 2020 presidential campaign.

The hearing became a flashpoint, with Kennedy’s comments drawing applause from conservative lawmakers and media outlets. Many saw it as a long-overdue exposure of hypocrisy among self-proclaimed progressive lawmakers.

The Sun

Fox Business added more depth, pointing out that Warren’s total health sector contributions far exceeded the figure Kennedy cited. The site emphasized that Warren’s 2020 presidential bid was heavily funded by donors connected to the health and pharmaceutical sectors.

Warren, known for her grandstanding against Wall Street and big business, had made healthcare profiteering a central campaign theme. Yet her own campaign coffers tell a different story, raising serious questions about her sincerity and independence.

Kennedy’s revelation was not a mere political jab. It was a direct challenge to the legitimacy of Warren’s role in shaping healthcare policy, especially when her financial ties to the industry remain largely unexamined by left-leaning media.

Warren’s unwillingness to address the exposure during the hearing drew criticism from conservative lawmakers, some of whom called for an ethics review. Senator Josh Hawley remarked, “If Senator Warren wants to hold others accountable, she should be prepared to answer for her own financial ties.”

Kennedy has made waves in his new role by promoting transparency and pushing for accountability across federal health agencies. His stance at the hearing only solidified his growing reputation as a disruptor who refuses to play by Washington’s double standards.

The media response was predictable. While conservative outlets covered the confrontation in detail, most mainstream liberal media outlets either downplayed it or ignored it altogether. This pattern has fueled growing distrust among voters who see media bias as shielding Democrats from scrutiny.

Online reactions were swift. On social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), clips of the exchange were shared widely, with many praising Kennedy’s courage and willingness to speak bluntly. One user wrote, “RFK Jr. just pulled back the curtain on Warren’s phony crusade against Big Pharma.”
