FLYERS HEARTBREAK: KOŃECNY’S BREAKAWAY MISS AND BLOWN LEAD SPARK OT DISASTER AS HURRICANES STORM TO 2-0 SERIES STRANGLEHOLD

Posted on May 5, 2026

The Philadelphia Flyers came roaring out with fire in their veins, only to watch their dream start crumble into a nightmare overtime collapse against the Carolina Hurricanes.

In a gut-wrenching Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Second Round, the Flyers built a shocking 2-0 lead in under five minutes — then couldn’t finish the job. Travis Konecny had the game on his stick in overtime, staring down Frederik Andersen alone, but his wrist shot was denied. Moments later, Taylor Hall delivered the dagger with 1:06 left, handing Carolina a 2-0 series lead and leaving Philly fans in stunned silence.

“It’s got to go in,” a devastated Konecny admitted afterward. “We played good tonight… I should have finished that. It should have been over.”

The Flyers jumped on the Hurricanes early with two goals in 39 seconds. Jamie Drysdale ripped a power-play laser from the slot to open the scoring, followed quickly by Sean Couturier’s slick one-timer in front. It was a total reversal from Game 1’s disastrous start.

But the momentum evaporated. Carolina clawed back, outshooting Philly 33-18 after the early blitz. The Flyers went just 1-for-7 on the power play despite endless chances, including a critical OT man-advantage they failed to cash.

In overtime, Philadelphia dominated early, outshooting the Canes 15-8 overall in the extra frame and generating prime looks. Yet they couldn’t solve Andersen. Then Hall struck, turning what looked like a Flyers victory into pure agony.

“We’ve always thought we can play with these guys,” defenseman Jamie Drysdale said. “Every regular-season game we were right there with them. It’s unfortunate… but we’ve got a few days here. Regroup, learn from it and come back harder at home.”

Game 3 shifts to Philadelphia on Thursday night. The Flyers head home down 2-0 but with belief that their early flashes — and lessons from missed opportunities — can ignite a series comeback. Will the home crowd fuel a furious push, or will Carolina’s relentless pressure end the Flyers’ Cinderella run early? The drama is just getting started.
