Eight Young Lives Lost in One Night: Louisiana Tragedy Leaves Mother Fighting for Recovery

Posted on May 3, 2026

A heartbreaking and senseless act of violence in Shreveport, Louisiana, has shattered a family and shaken an entire community to its core.

On Sunday, April 17, 2026, a violent incident involving Shamar Elkins resulted in the deaths of eight children and left two women, including the children’s mother, critically injured.

Christina Snow, 31, was badly hurt in the shooting, with a bullet wound to her face that doctors have not yet removed. Her cousin, Jamarckus Snow, shared that while Christina can speak, she is dealing with memory loss and has trouble remembering the devastating loss of her children.

The Incident That Changed Everything

The events unfolded early that morning when Shamar Elkins, 31, took the lives of seven children from two families and also shot his wife, Shaneiqua Pugh, who remains in critical condition.

The violence started on Harrison Street just before 6 a.m., where Elkins reportedly shot Christina Snow and took her children. He then went to a home on West 79th Street, where he tragically ended the lives of seven more children while they were sleeping, most shot in the head.

The eight child victims were:

  • Jayla Elkins, 3
  • Shayla Elkins, 5
  • Kayla Pugh, 6
  • Layla Pugh, 7
  • Markaydon Pugh, 10
  • Sariahh Snow, 11
  • Khedarrion Snow, 6
  • Braylon Snow, 5

Neighbors were left in complete shock. Freddie Montgomery, who lives nearby, remembered seeing the children playing happily in the yard just days earlier. “It made no sense,” he said, still struggling with the news.

A Mother’s Deep Pain and Family Grief

Jamarckus Snow described how the family is overwhelmed by the loss. Christina’s physical recovery is now joined by the unimaginable emotional weight of losing her children.

He recalled a conversation with Christina’s mother, who said her daughter woke up confused and asked about getting the kids ready for school. “One day, she’ll remember they’re gone,” he shared. “She’ll lose memory of what happened, and the next day she thinks her kids are still there.”

A Quiet Neighborhood Forever Changed

The tragedy has left the Shreveport community searching for answers. Mack London, a 71-year-old neighbor, said, “Nothing like this has ever happened on this street. I hate that it happened to those kids.”

What was once a peaceful area where children played safely is now filled with sorrow as families mourn lives taken far too soon.

Moving Forward After Unimaginable Loss

Shamar Elkins died after a carjacking and confrontation with police following the incident. His wife, Shaneiqua Pugh, and other survivors face a difficult path to healing.

The families continue to grieve while focusing on recovery and honoring the memories of the children. The community has come together to support them during this incredibly hard time.

In the days since, Shreveport residents are holding the victims close in their hearts and hoping for strength and peace for all those affected. The young lives lost will be remembered by their loved ones forever.
