Classroom Nightmare: 9-Year-Old Claims Substitute Teacher Told Students to Attack Him

Posted on April 28, 2026

A normal school day at Robert Burns Elementary-Middle School in Detroit took a shocking turn, leaving a 9-year-old boy injured and his family demanding answers. What began as a routine classroom instruction has now sparked serious allegations of violence and a breakdown in adult responsibility.

8 Things Your Substitute Teacher Needs to Succeed

The incident centers on fourth-grader C’Antae Fleming. According to his account and his family, a substitute teacher told him to stay seated and away from a computer. When he didn’t follow directions right away, the teacher reportedly instructed other students to “handle” him. C’Antae says she warned that if he got up again, the class would “jump” him.

What followed, he described, was a chaotic scene where classmates pushed and hit him. He says he was held down, choked, and struck — not only by students but also by the teacher herself. The altercation left him with visible injuries, including a concussion and a black eye. For his mother, Jay’Shelle Warfield, the situation is especially alarming because C’Antae has a history of seizures, making any head trauma more dangerous.

Warfield was devastated to learn about the event not from the school, but through her other children and another parent. She says the most painful part is believing an adult in charge not only put hands on her son but also encouraged other kids to do the same. “A classroom should be a safe place,” she has emphasized.

Detroit Public Schools Community District has placed the substitute teacher on administrative leave and removed her from assignments while they investigate. Officials say if misconduct is confirmed, the case will be referred to law enforcement.

The case has raised broader worries about school safety, proper discipline, and how quickly situations can escalate when young students are involved. Children look to adults for guidance and protection — when that trust is questioned, it affects families across the community.

C’Antae is now focused on recovering from his injuries, both physical and emotional. His family wants a full investigation to determine exactly what happened inside that classroom and to ensure steps are taken so no other child experiences something similar.

As officials review statements and evidence, many are left asking how such an event could unfold in a place meant for learning — and what needs to change to prevent it from happening again.
