The Boston Bruins refused to let their season end on the road, delivering a heart-stopping overtime win to keep their playoff hopes alive. They defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 in Game 5 on Tuesday night at KeyBank Center, forcing the series back to TD Garden for Game 6 on Friday.
It was a tightly contested battle from start to finish. Buffalo jumped ahead early when Rasmus Dahlin ripped a perfect one-timer from Jason Zucker just 3:30 into the first period. After that, Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman took over, turning aside 26 of 27 shots in a masterful performance that included more than 60 minutes of shutout hockey.
Boston’s offense finally broke through midway through the second period. During a strong offensive zone possession, Elias Lindholm pounced on a juicy rebound and fired a quick snap shot past Sabres goalie Alex Lyon to tie the game at 1-1.
Both teams traded chances in a scoreless third period, with Lyon and Swayman standing tall in net to keep things even. The overtime frame stayed tense until Boston found the decisive moment. David Pastrnak received a long stretch pass from Hampus Lindholm fresh off a line change, raced in on a breakaway, and made a beautiful move — faking a backhand to force Lyon down before shifting to his forehand and sliding home the winner.
The Bruins now return home with new life, hoping to extend the series once more in front of their passionate fans at TD Garden. Pastrnak’s clutch play and Swayman’s stellar goaltending gave Boston the edge in a game that showcased playoff hockey at its finest.
