Born with bronchopulmonary dysplasia and pulmonary hypertension, Amelia’s early life was filled with uncertainty. Her parents, devastated by the news, knew that their little girl would need the best possible care to survive and thrive.
After being referred and transferred to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) from South Georgia, Amelia was placed in the hands of the most skilled doctors and nurses, who would become her champions throughout her journey.
Amelia’s diagnosis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and pulmonary hypertension was a heavy blow. BPD is a chronic lung condition that affects premature infants, and pulmonary hypertension causes increased blood pressure in the lungs, which can strain the heart and make breathing difficult.
For Amelia, these conditions made even the simplest of tasks, like breathing, a challenge. Despite the severity of her health concerns, Amelia’s family remained hopeful.
They trusted in the expertise of the medical team at Children’s, who quickly went to work to stabilize Amelia and provide the care she needed to overcome the obstacles she faced.
Amelia’s journey took a crucial turn when she underwent tracheostomy tube surgery, a procedure that would help her breathe more easily and allow her to receive the oxygen she needed to survive. The surgery was a success, and although it was a difficult procedure, Amelia’s recovery was nothing short of remarkable. With a tracheostomy tube in place, Amelia’s breathing improved, and she was able to focus on the next steps in her recovery.
Despite the many challenges she faced, Amelia’s infectious smile and unwavering spirit never faded.
