It’s loud, happy, and unfiltered, echoing through rooms and filling them with warmth. “We know that laugh,” chuckled Cassie McCormick of Mayfield, Kentucky, as she talked about her son. And indeed, she should know—it’s her 20-year-old son, Kaiden “Mac” McCormick, who has made a lasting impact on those around him with his joyful spirit.
Just under two years ago, Mac was living what many would call a wonderful life. It was May 2nd, 2024, and Mac was a freshman at the University of Kentucky. He was navigating the busy and exciting world of college life, surrounded by new friends, experiencing freedom, and dreaming of his future. Like many other 18-year-olds, Mac was beginning to carve out his path in the world, ready to embrace all that life had to offer. It was a time filled with promise, hope, and new beginnings.
But that day, everything changed. Mac was in the cafeteria at the University of Kentucky, enjoying a typical day, when without warning, he blacked out. In an instant, everything Mac had known about his life was turned upside down. What followed was a devastating diagnosis: a brain aneurysm.
The suddenness of the event left his family in shock. One minute, Mac was laughing and living life, and the next, he was fighting for his life. Within 45 minutes of his aneurysm, Mac was on the operating table. The quick action of the medical team was the only thing that saved him. His mother, Cassie, recalls the frantic rush to the hospital. “Within 45 minutes of his aneurysm, Mac was on the operating table, and that saved his life,” Cassie explains. It was a close call, and Mac’s survival was nothing short of a miracle.
Mac had a craniotomy to address the aneurysm and, unfortunately, faced even more complications along the way. “Mac had a craniotomy at his right frontal lobe—he also had brain stem complications,” Cassie explains. This was just the beginning of what would become a long and painful journey for Mac and his family. As if one life-threatening issue wasn’t enough, just weeks later, Mac would face even more medical challenges.
On May 14th, another surgery was ordered. Mac suffered a pulmonary embolism, a dangerous and often fatal condition that occurs when a blood clot blocks a vessel in the lungs. His family’s world was shaken again. The road ahead seemed impossibly steep. But even in the midst of these challenges, Mac’s resilience shone through. He wasn’t giving up.
In July, after weeks of uncertainty, Mac finally emerged from a coma. He was awake, but his life had been irreversibly changed. The road to recovery would be long, but Mac was determined to fight. He began the painful process of rehab, working hard to regain as much independence as possible. But Mac’s diagnosis had become more severe: he was a spastic quadriplegic, a condition that left him with limited movement below his neck. For someone who had once been full of life and energy, this was an unimaginable blow. But Mac wasn’t defined by his diagnosis. He was defined by his spirit.
“Mac has movement in his right arm,” Cassie explains. “His right leg is almost normal—he can lift his left leg a bit.” The progress was slow, but it was progress. Mac wasn’t going to let the severity of his condition stop him from living life. And that’s what his family, especially Cassie, wanted the world to know. Cassie McCormick asked me to write about Mac, not because of his limitations, but because of the incredible person he continues to be. She wants everyone to see the strength, the humor, and the determination that defines her son.
“Mac can speak some, although his speech is delayed,” she says. It’s a struggle, but Mac communicates. His ability to communicate is a powerful testament to his determination and the love of his family. “He chews some—his vision has been affected, too,” Cassie adds. While some of the effects of his aneurysm and the subsequent surgeries continue to impact his daily life, Mac doesn’t focus on what he can’t do. Instead, he focuses on what he can.
Mac embraces everything he can do with a sense of purpose and joy. “Mac loves church and worships God,” his mother proudly shares. For Mac, his faith is an essential part of his life, a source of strength and comfort. He’s not just surviving—he’s thriving in his own way. “He loves being with his family and laughing with me,” Cassie adds, speaking of the special bond between mother and son. Even though Mac’s life looks different now, the love between him and his family has only grown stronger.
Mac still enjoys the simple things in life that bring him joy. “He loves going to sporting events, concerts, and movies,” Cassie says. His favorite team? Florida State. Even though his mobility is limited, Mac still enjoys the experiences that make life meaningful. He loves to watch TV, text his friends, and continue building the connections that are so important to him.
Despite his physical limitations, Mac holds onto the hope that one day, his life may be different. “Mac wants you to know he loves church and loves to worship God. He loves to be with his family and laugh with his mom,” Cassie says. But Mac has another hope, too. He hopes that, with God’s help, his left side will one day work again. It’s a simple, but powerful wish—a desire for the future that keeps him going each day.
“I’m glad I had a chance to introduce you to Mac McCormick,” I tell Cassie, as she reflects on her son’s journey. “Who is hoping if God could do anything in the future, it would be to make his left side work again.” Until that hopeful day comes, Mac will continue to laugh that wonderful laugh of his and inspire those around him. “We love hearing that laugh,” says Cassie. “It means Mac is happy.”
Mac’s story is not one of despair, but one of perseverance, love, and joy despite overwhelming odds. He teaches us that no matter how much life changes, we can still find a way to laugh, to love, and to keep going. His family, especially his parents Tim and Cassie, along with his siblings Kayson and Kylie, continue to support and cherish him through every moment.
