A Mother's Strength: A Journey Through Scoliosis, Surgery, and Triumph 5808

In January 2018, my world was turned upside down when I noticed something wasn’t quite right with my daughter Ivey. She had always been a lively, energetic child, particularly excelling in gymnastics. But lately, something had changed. She could no longer perform the simple cartwheels she used to do with ease, and her body seemed to be betraying her. At first, I brushed it off, thinking it was just a phase. But as I watched her struggle with basic movements, my instincts told me that something deeper was wrong.

Her pediatrician reassured me that it was likely just growing pains, advising me to wait it out and see if the problem resolved on its own. But my mother’s intuition was insistent, and I felt an overwhelming need to get a second opinion. So, we sought out another doctor. After a few quick X-rays, the truth was finally revealed—the diagnosis was scoliosis.

My heart sank. I had heard of scoliosis before, but I had no real understanding of the severity of the condition. The news became even more overwhelming when I learned that my husband also had scoliosis. It was a genetic condition that we now had to face head-on with our daughter. The curve in her spine was already significant, and the future seemed uncertain. The fear and sadness I felt for my little girl were immense, and I knew that our lives would never be the same.

We were referred to the renowned Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital, where the doctors began mapping out a treatment plan. Ivey was prescribed a back brace, which she would have to wear for 20 hours a day. At just 11 years old, this new reality was daunting for her. The brace was large, uncomfortable, and a constant reminder of her condition. It restricted her ability to move freely, sit comfortably, and even eat properly. Simple activities became a challenge.

She struggled to use the bathroom on her own, and her favorite clothes—jeans, which she adored—were no longer wearable. Instead, she had to swap them out for leggings and maternity pants. But through it all, Ivey remained resolute. Despite the discomfort and frustration, she maintained a positive attitude. She even carried her brace with her on family vacations, refusing to let it stop her from living her life.

At the same time, the progression of her condition slowed, but as the months went on, we were hit with a harsh reality: surgery was becoming inevitable. I’ll never forget the phone call when the doctor confirmed it. “She definitely needs surgery,” he said. The words echoed in my mind. I had known deep down that this day might come, but hearing those words made everything feel real. I couldn’t bear to imagine what this might mean for my strong, vibrant daughter. How would she cope? How would this surgery change her life?

Fortunately, Ivey had a close friend, Kaitylnn, who had undergone the same surgery. Though they lived a few hours apart, their bond grew stronger during this difficult time. Kaitylnn was able to provide much-needed comfort and advice, helping Ivey understand what to expect. This shared experience brought them closer, offering Ivey a source of reassurance amidst the uncertainty.

Despite the heavy emotions, Ivey didn’t want to miss the community event she was involved in, Bras 4 a Cause, a breast cancer awareness campaign that was close to her heart. We scheduled the surgery for the week after the event so that she could still participate. During this time, we also met with other parents who had children who had undergone similar procedures. Their insights were invaluable in preparing us for what was to come.

When the day of surgery arrived, I could barely hold myself together. It was 4 a.m., and we made our way to the hospital, where a chaplain prayed with us before the surgery. I felt numb as I watched my daughter being wheeled away, her future uncertain. The feeling of helplessness washed over me, and I feared the worst.

The surgery lasted eight grueling hours. Every minute felt like an eternity, but finally, we were informed that everything had gone well. Ivey had undergone major spinal surgery, fusing 90% of her back. When she woke up, she was two inches taller, her spine now straight. The transformation was remarkable, but my heart broke seeing how much she had endured.

For the next few days, we stayed in the hospital, where Ivey was monitored closely in the ICU. The medical team at Scottish Rite went above and beyond in providing us with not only physical care but emotional support as well. Ivey’s strength in the face of such pain was awe-inspiring. She fought through the discomfort with courage and determination, and as her mother, I couldn’t have been prouder.

When we returned home, the support from friends, family, and even the community was overwhelming. Meals were brought to us, and people reached out to offer assistance in any way they could. It was a difficult time, but we weren’t alone. Slowly, Ivey began to recover, and by four weeks after surgery, she was off all prescription medications, and her incision was healing beautifully. She went back to school part-time, catching up on missed work, and even returned to dance class to support her teammates. Her resilience amazed everyone around her.

Months later, Ivey continued to make incredible progress. She plans to return to dance and compete in regional and state competitions, and she’s excited to show her rabbits with her FFA chapter. The girl who once wore a back brace every day is now a fierce competitor and a source of inspiration for everyone who knows her.

Ivey’s journey has been a long and difficult one, but it’s also been filled with strength, love, and unwavering support. Watching her fight through adversity has been humbling, and I’m beyond proud of the young woman she is becoming. She has proven that with determination, anything is possible. I am endlessly grateful for the community that has surrounded us, and for the strength Ivey has shown every step of the way. She is truly a scoliosis warrior, and I am so blessed to be her mother.
