A mom’s love reshaped the course of her baby’s life in a story that feels almost unreal.
Salt Lake City native Ashlynn Moss gave birth to her son Luka in 2023, expecting the normal rhythm of a new life beginning.
But soon after he arrived, doctors noticed something was wrong — his skin and eyes were tinged yellow, a sign of dangerously high bilirubin levels.
At first glance, Luka appeared healthy, but deeper tests told a different story.
An ultrasound showed he had no gallbladder and no connecting bile ducts — the tiny tubes that normally link the liver, gallbladder, and small intestine.
Further examinations revealed a rare liver condition known as biliary atresia — a disease in which bile can’t drain from the liver, leading to build‑up and eventual liver failure.
In response, Luka underwent a Kasai surgery at only 14 days old — a procedure in which part of the small intestine is used to bypass the missing bile ducts.
The goal of the operation was to create a new pathway for bile to drain.
But even after the Kasai procedure, Luka’s jaundice worsened and his condition continued to deteriorate.
As his illness progressed, Ashlynn watched in despair as her once tiny and seemingly healthy baby grew sicker and sicker, the yellow of his skin deepening with every passing day.
Eventually, Luka was placed on the transplant list — a desperate step taken when the Kasai surgery couldn’t keep his liver functioning.
A hope arose when a deceased donor liver became available — but heartbreak struck again when the offer fell through due to delays and complications, crushing the family at a moment when they thought relief had arrived.
Luka’s father, Hayden, wasn’t a match for the transplant due to his body mass results.
And then, amid fear and uncertainty, Ashlynn made a decision that would change everything.
She resolved to become a living donor herself — even though the thought was terrifying, she knew it was the only chance her son had.
After completing testing, doctors confirmed she was a match for Luka.
In June 2024, Ashlynn underwent surgery to donate part of her liver — 22 % of her left lobe was removed and prepared to be transplanted into Luka.
The morning of the operation, she said she felt a strange mix of fear and resolve — eager for the moment when her son could begin healing.
After her liver was removed, surgeons rushed it to the children’s hospital where Luka’s transplant surgery began — a procedure that lasted around eight hours.
It was a marathon of surgical coordination, hope, and prayer.
Ashlynn spent three days recovering, focusing only on one thing — seeing her son again.
And when she finally walked into the hospital room and saw Luka’s tiny face — still connected to life by tubes and machines — she described the moment as “surreal.”
She said it felt almost out‑of‑body, knowing they had both just undergone such profound surgeries and that Luka was finally on a path to recovery.
For Ashlynn, it was a moment of deep relief mixed with quiet astonishment at how far they had come together.
And Luka’s story didn’t end there.
As the months passed, he continued to grow stronger.
His father, Hayden, later confirmed that Luka is now healthy and hitting milestones normal for a toddler — a far cry from the dire prognosis earlier in his life.
Doctors continue to monitor him, and he takes daily medications to keep his transplanted liver functioning properly — a lifelong commitment for survival and health.
For Ashlynn, the transplant was not just medicine — it was proof of love in its most visceral, physical form.
She said she wanted Luka to always know how unconditionally loved he is, and that there would never be a question in her mind about another sacrifice for her children if it were needed.
Her decision to undergo the transplant was described by her as stepping up to be the “bravest scared mom” she could be — a phrase that encapsulates both fear and fierce maternal love.
This story became a reflection on how far a parent is willing to go when every second counts and every heartbeat matters.
