A Miracle Baby is Born
It all started back in January 2025, when Beth Duensing gave birth to her son, Whit, at just 27 weeks of gestation. Whit weighed a mere 2 lbs. 12 oz. when he was born, and though he was small, his fight for life began the moment he took his first breath.

Beth, a pediatrician, had been diagnosed with pneumonia late last year. Her health deteriorated rapidly, and doctors made the difficult decision to deliver Whit early to give both mother and baby a chance at survival. The situation was dire, and the chances of both of them surviving seemed slim.
Beth was rushed to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida, where she was hooked up to an ECMO machine to stay alive. ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) is a life-saving procedure that acts as an artificial heart and lung, allowing the body to heal while taking over the functions that are failing.
“We thought we were going to lose her,” said Adam Duensing, Beth’s husband. “She had to be brought back to life at least 10 times during that period. It was the most terrifying experience of our lives.”

A Family’s Strength Amid Crisis
But Beth, being the fighter that she is, defied the odds. She fought through each setback and miracle, slowly recovering from the life-threatening pneumonia that had ravaged her body. After weeks of being on ECMO, she began to show signs of improvement, and it became clear that she wasn’t ready to give up just yet. The strength she displayed throughout her recovery was nothing short of miraculous.
And then, in January, Whit was born. His early arrival was a sign that things were still uncertain, but as soon as he came into the world, his own fight for survival began. The tiny baby, who had been given a slim chance of survival due to his prematurity, was strong from the start. Despite his tiny size, Whit proved that he was just as determined as his mother.

Beth spent weeks recovering while Whit fought for his life in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). They were both in separate parts of the hospital, each facing their own battles, but their connection remained unbreakable.
A New Chapter Begins
Just a few months later, after Beth’s miraculous recovery, the family received the incredible news that Whit’s condition had stabilized enough to be moved closer to home. In March 2025, Beth was discharged from the hospital, and Whit was finally flown from Shands in Gainesville to USA Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Mobile, Alabama, just a short distance from their home.
“We are so relieved to have Beth home with us,” said Adam. “She’s been through so much, and now, to have Whit closer to us—it’s a blessing.”
The family’s journey was far from over, though. Whit still had a long road ahead of him. He remained in the NICU in Mobile, where doctors continued to monitor his progress. His lungs, still underdeveloped from being born prematurely, would need time to grow stronger before he could finally go home.
“We’re so close now,” said Adam. “Beth’s recovery is nothing short of a miracle, and we’re just so grateful to have Whit here with us. It’s hard to put into words just how blessed we feel to be together.”
A Miracle Recovery
Beth’s recovery has been nothing short of extraordinary. Not only did she survive a near-fatal illness, but she also defied the odds to be there for her son. She went from being on life support to walking out of the hospital, a testament to the power of faith, medical care, and sheer will.
“We believe that God’s hand has been over our family,” said Adam. “Every step of this journey, from Beth’s recovery to Whit’s fight for life, has been a miracle. We know that we couldn’t have made it through this without the support of our family, our friends, and the amazing doctors and nurses who cared for us.”
While Whit still faces challenges ahead, the family is hopeful for the future. As of now, Whit is stable, and his parents are focusing on getting him stronger. They hope that soon, Whit will be able to breathe on his own, without the need for extra oxygen or support.
“It’s going to take time,” said Beth. “But we are so grateful for where we are today. I can’t wait to take Whit home and begin our new life together as a family.”
A Future Full of Hope
The story of Whit and Beth Duensing is still being written, and though they’ve already been through so much, there is so much more to look forward to. As the family continues to navigate their journey, they are filled with hope and gratitude.
One day, Beth and Adam hope to share their story with the world, and the idea of writing a book has crossed their minds. The title would be fitting: A Miracle Story. It would tell the tale of a mother’s fight for survival, a baby’s fight for life, and a family’s unwavering love and strength in the face of the impossible.
For now, though, the Duensing family is focusing on the present. They are relishing the small victories and the joy of having Beth back home and Whit just a few blocks away in the hospital, on his way to recovery.
Whit, the baby who fought so hard to survive, and Beth, the mother whose resilience inspired everyone around her, are living proof that miracles happen. And as their story continues to unfold, it will be one of hope, strength, and the power of a family’s love.
We all continue to pray for Whit, Beth, and the entire family as they await the day when they can finally bring Whit home.
