In a community that had already been touched by tragedy, the loss of 17‑year‑old Colby Minis has left an indelible mark on family, friends, and everyone who knew him.
The young teenager, who was full of promise and potential, tragically passed away on December 26, 2024, after battling the severe injuries he sustained in a rollover crash just days earlier.
It all started on December 23, when Bryan County deputies responded to a distressing scene around 1:30 p.m..
Four teenage boys were trapped inside a car that had rolled over.
The crash was catastrophic, and though paramedics worked swiftly to get the boys airlifted to a hospital in Savannah, the damage had already been done.
Two of the boys were in critical condition, and despite their best efforts, Colby couldn’t fight any longer.
The news hit like a thunderclap, devastating everyone who had hoped, prayed, and waited for his recovery.
Nikki Sloan, Colby’s aunt and caretaker, couldn’t hold back her grief as she remembered the vibrant young man that was her nephew.
“He was a light,” Sloan said, her voice breaking.
“I would do anything to hear his laugh right now.”
Those words echoed the love and devotion Colby had for his family — a bond so close that his aunt knew exactly who to call when life threw challenges their way.
But when she received that dreaded phone call on Monday, the one that no parent or guardian ever expects to hear, she immediately knew something was terribly wrong.
“As soon as the officer said that Colby was in an accident and I needed to get to the hospital, my stomach dropped,” Sloan recalled.
“I knew something was very wrong.”
In that moment, the hope that Colby would make it through this tragedy started to slip away, replaced by an overwhelming sense of fear and helplessness.
Colby’s family said he was the kind of kid who could change the mood of any room.
With his big smile, boisterous laugh, and a personality that lit up the darkest places, he was known as someone who could bring joy wherever he went.
And he had plans.
Colby dreamed of going to college and playing baseball at UGA, his love for the game driving him to pursue that goal with all his heart.
Now, those dreams — dreams that should have blossomed into his future — were cut short in the blink of an eye.
Despite the sorrow that weighs heavy on Colby’s family, they have chosen to turn their grief into a lesson.
They hope that this tragic loss will be a catalyst for conversation about the importance of driving safety, particularly for young drivers.
“Please, don’t let this 17‑year‑old’s death be for nothing… talk to your kids,” Sloan urged, her voice filled with emotion.
She wants other families to understand the risks, to have those tough conversations, and to remind their loved ones of the dangers that come with the roads.
Though nothing can bring Colby back, his family takes solace in the memories of the young man who meant so much to so many.
For Colby’s parents, his aunt, and his friends, his sudden passing leaves a void that can never truly be filled.
But his legacy will live on in the lessons he’s left behind — about love, laughter, and the importance of cherishing every moment.
The road ahead for Colby’s family will be marked by grief, but also by a deep and unshakeable love for the boy they lost far too soon.
As funeral arrangements for Colby Minis are being planned, his family and friends are left to navigate a world without him.
A world that will never be the same without his laughter and light.
May he rest in peace.
Forever remembered, forever missed.
