Darrah O’Sullivan and Vince Greenaway were thrilled when their twin daughters, Maeve and Orla, were born on April 8, 2024. However, their joy quickly turned to confusion and heartbreak when Maeve, born at 36 weeks, failed to open her eyes after birth. A pediatrician’s initial concern led to a devastating diagnosis: bilateral anophthalmia, a rare condition where the eyes fail to develop.
The condition affects only one in 100,000 babies, and the diagnosis was a shock to Darrah and Vince. “It was the best and worst week of our lives all at once,” Darrah recalls. “At first, we kept thinking there must be a way to fix it, but there wasn’t. We were so worried about her future.”
The initial uncertainty was overwhelming. As the days passed, the family tried to process the news and figure out what the future would hold for their daughter. An MRI scan at just five days old confirmed that Maeve’s condition was isolated, and there were no other health issues. Still, the thought of her future was daunting.
“We were devastated,” Darrah admits, still grappling with the reality of their daughter’s condition. “It was hard to understand how life would be for Maeve.”
After spending a week in the hospital, Maeve and her family returned home. The next chapter would be about adjusting to their new reality and figuring out how best to support their daughter. It was a hard adjustment, but the family remained optimistic.
Now, at 10 months old, Maeve is thriving. She has surpassed her parents’ early expectations, and they reflect on how much their worries were unwarranted. “Looking back, I wonder what we were so worried about,” Darrah says. “She’s the most beautiful, happy little girl. She may not be able to see, but she experiences the world in her own way—and that’s not a bad thing.”
Maeve’s development has been steady. She has been fitted with conformers, small plastic shells that help her eye sockets develop properly. As she grows older, these will be replaced with prosthetic eyes, most likely blue to match her twin sister Orla’s eyes. This small but significant step is part of Maeve’s journey, and her parents are determined to raise her in an environment where her condition is embraced and accepted.
“It will never be a taboo subject in our home,” Darrah explains. “We’ll all learn braille together. It will just be part of our everyday life.”
The family’s outlook remains positive and hopeful. While the early days were filled with uncertainty, they have remained strong, focusing on the progress Maeve is making every day. “We took some time to process everything, but since then, we’ve stayed strong and optimistic,” Vince says. The family has been actively involved in Maeve’s development, seeking specialists to help with her mobility and sensory skills, and planning for her education as she grows, including learning braille.
Despite the challenges, Darrah and Vince are committed to raising awareness about Maeve’s condition. “People can be curious when we’re out,” Vince admits, “so we just explain her condition and try to raise awareness.”
The family has also found immense support from online communities and charities that assist families in similar situations. “Her condition is rare, but blindness itself isn’t,” Darrah says. “There’s so much support and so many resources out there. We truly believe nothing will hold her back.”
In addition to caring for Maeve, Vince has taken an active role in raising awareness for children with similar conditions. He has signed up to run the 2025 London Marathon with Darrah’s sisters, Maddie and Chloe, in support of a charity for children with rare conditions like Maeve’s. Their fundraising efforts have already raised over £12,000, a testament to the family’s commitment to the cause.
“It started as an emotional idea, but now it means so much more,” Vince says of his marathon challenge. Darrah, full of pride for her husband, says, “I’m incredibly proud of them. Vince trains early in the morning, works all day, and still helps at home. It’s amazing.”
The marathon, which is a significant milestone for the family, is not just about raising funds—it’s about raising awareness for Maeve’s condition and showing the world that children like her can live full, happy lives. With support from their community and the love they have for Maeve, Darrah and Vince are more determined than ever to ensure their daughter’s condition never defines her.
“We’ll make sure Maeve has the same opportunities as any other child,” Darrah says. “We’re not going to let her condition limit her. We’re going to make sure she knows how loved and accepted she is, no matter what.”
Through all the challenges, the family has remained a strong unit. Maeve is surrounded by love, and her journey is already proving to be one of strength and resilience. For Darrah and Vince, their daughter’s smile and laughter are the greatest gifts. “We truly believe nothing will hold her back,” Darrah says, “and we will continue to support her every step of the way.”
