Brayden Zorn, a brave and resilient 3-year-old from River Ridge, Louisiana, had already faced more in his short life than many could ever imagine. His journey, marked by hardship, uncertainty, and perseverance, is a testament to the strength of his spirit and the unwavering love of his family.
In the spring of 2020, Brayden’s parents, Falyn and Brian, were overjoyed to welcome their seventh child into their growing family. Life was busy, but it was full of happiness and love. However, the joy they felt at bringing their new son into the world quickly turned into fear and uncertainty. It all began at a routine 14-week prenatal appointment when Falyn, who had experienced smooth pregnancies in the past, was unexpectedly told that her amniotic fluid levels were dangerously low.
The doctors were concerned and informed Falyn that this condition, called oligohydramnios, could lead to miscarriage or preterm labor. As the weeks went on, the family’s worry grew as the doctors were unable to determine the exact condition of the baby, as the lack of amniotic fluid meant the baby wasn’t visible on the ultrasound. The unknowns were terrifying, but the Zorn family tried to stay hopeful as they navigated this uncertain journey.
By 36 weeks, Falyn was told that she would need to deliver the baby immediately. The doctors explained that the baby’s lungs had developed only to the level of a 14-week-old fetus and that the chances of survival outside the womb were slim. “I remember thinking, ‘This isn’t how it’s supposed to go. This can’t be happening,'” Falyn recalled, her voice filled with emotion. But against all odds, Brayden was born on June 1, 2023, crying loudly and proving the doctors wrong.
Still, the challenges were far from over. Brayden was immediately rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at the local hospital, where doctors discovered that he had one kidney and cysts on the remaining one. The Zorn family’s world had just been turned upside down. Their newborn son was facing a life-or-death struggle, and the road ahead was uncertain. After 17 days in the NICU, Brayden needed more specialized care, and the family was transferred to Children’s Hospital New Orleans for advanced treatment.
At Children’s Hospital, Brayden’s journey would become even more challenging. He underwent numerous tests, including surgeries, and faced complications such as respiratory issues, and kidney failure. The doctors discovered that Brayden also had Pierre Robin syndrome, a condition that resulted from his lack of amniotic fluid in the womb. His small jaw and underdeveloped airway made it difficult for him to breathe on his own.
Through it all, Brayden never stopped fighting. His strength and determination were evident even in the darkest moments. In July 2022, the Zorns received the long-awaited news that Brayden was finally a candidate for a kidney transplant. But, due to his dependency on a ventilator, he was initially ineligible for the transplant. The doctors, however, didn’t give up. They were determined to help Brayden reach a point where he could survive the transplant.
The next step in Brayden’s journey involved removing his breathing tube and performing a reconstructive surgery on his esophagus, which had been underdeveloped. Dr. Jessica Zaggory, a pediatric surgeon, along with a team of respiratory and ENT specialists, performed the surgery to give Brayden a fighting chance. After the procedure, Brayden was able to be placed on the transplant list, and his family was overjoyed at the possibility of giving their son a chance at a normal life.
Months passed, and the Zorns remained hopeful. Finally, in September 2022, they received the news they had been waiting for: a living donor had been found. Sonya, a stranger to the Zorns, heard about Brayden’s need for a kidney through Brian’s colleague and offered to get tested to see if she could help. Miraculously, Sonya was a perfect match. The family couldn’t believe the gift that this kind stranger was giving them. They were filled with gratitude and awe.
Despite facing several setbacks and delays in the transplant process, the surgery was finally scheduled for September 27, 2023. The day of the transplant marked Brayden’s 15th surgery since birth, and he became the youngest patient ever to receive a kidney transplant at Children’s Hospital New Orleans. The procedure was a success, and Brayden’s new lease on life began.
Brayden’s recovery after the transplant was a challenging but rewarding journey. With the support of his family, doctors, and the dedicated team at Children’s Hospital, Brayden began to heal. He continued to receive care and follow-up appointments, but the worst of his struggles were behind him. He had defied the odds, showing incredible resilience and courage in the face of overwhelming adversity.
Today, at 4 years old, Brayden is thriving. He’s a happy, energetic little boy who enjoys playing with his siblings and exploring the world around him. He continues to receive regular check-ups at Children’s Hospital and is doing well. His parents, Falyn and Brian, are filled with gratitude for the care their son has received and the medical team that has helped him along the way.
“We are so grateful for everything the doctors, nurses, and staff at Children’s Hospital have done for Brayden,” said Falyn. “They’ve not only given him a second chance at life but have also supported our family through this incredibly difficult journey. Without them, we wouldn’t have made it through.”
