Hampton’s first few months were filled with ups and downs. After her 64 days in the NICU, we were finally able to bring her home, but the relief was bittersweet. We knew we were only preparing for the next challenge—an open-heart surgery she would need at four months of age. Hampton was diagnosed with an Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD), a complex congenital heart defect involving a hole between the heart’s chambers and issues with the heart’s valves. This condition required surgery, but we were told to wait until Hampton was big enough and strong enough to handle the procedure.
The news was overwhelming, but we held on to the belief that with the right care, Hampton would make it through. We cherished our time at home, but the looming surgery always hung over us. The doctors at Vanderbilt were incredible, and we placed our trust in their expertise. Yet, the constant worry about how Hampton would handle the surgery weighed heavily on our hearts.
The Unexpected Turn: Pulmonary Hypertension and New Challenges
At nine months old, Hampton’s health took an unexpected and terrifying turn. She developed severe pulmonary hypertension, a condition in which the blood pressure in the lungs becomes dangerously high, making it harder for her heart to function. The doctors provided us with little information about the condition, leaving us feeling helpless and confused. All we knew was that this was life-threatening, and time was running out.
The severity of Hampton’s pulmonary hypertension made her condition even more critical. Her need for surgery became more urgent, and we were told that if Hampton were to survive the surgery, her chances of making it out of the operating room were only 50/50. The uncertainty of this prognosis was devastating. The thought of losing our little girl, who had already fought so hard to get this far, was unbearable.

Finally, the day of Hampton’s surgery arrived, and the weight of the situation was overwhelming. As a mother, you never want to see your child undergo such an intense procedure, especially when the chances of survival are so slim. But we had no choice. The surgery was necessary to save Hampton’s life, and we had to trust the incredible medical team at Vanderbilt.
