Pfaadt vs. Walker: Can the Phillies’ Bats Solve Brandon Pfaadt in Saturday Matinee? .v1

PHILADELPHIA — The turnaround time in baseball is unforgiving. Less than 15 hours after the heartbreak of the home opener, the Phillies return to Citizens Bank Park for a Saturday matinee that feels far more important than a typical April contest. At 1:05 PM ET, the focus shifts to a tactical battle: Taijuan Walker vs. Brandon Pfaadt.

For Walker (0-2, 7.20 ERA), today is about survival and redemption. The veteran right-hander has struggled mightily in his first two starts of 2026, failing to locate his splitter and getting punished for elevated fastballs. With top prospect Andrew Painter looking to find his footing and Zack Wheeler still weeks away, the Phillies desperately need Walker to provide “stability innings.” His ability to navigate the top of the Diamondbacks’ order—specifically the speed threats of Carroll and Marte—will determine how long Rob Thomson can keep his high-leverage relievers in the pen.

The bigger challenge, however, may lie in the batter’s box. The Phillies’ offense faces Brandon Pfaadt, a pitcher who has historically given Philadelphia fits with his high-spin sweeper and aggressive strike-zone attack. Pfaadt enters the game with a 1-0 record and a 3.12 ERA, having dismantled the Padres in his last outing.

“Pfaadt is a rhythm pitcher,” noted hitting coach Kevin Long. “If you let him get ahead with the heater, he’s going to bury you with that slider. Our guys need to be aggressive early in the count. We saw some better swings last night, but we need to sustain that pressure throughout all nine innings, not just the final three.”

The key for the Phillies will be Kyle Schwarber. The leadoff man has been uncharacteristically quiet during the recent slide, and a “Schwarbomb” early in the game could be the catalyst needed to rattle Pfaadt. If the Phillies can force the Diamondbacks into their middle relief by the sixth inning, they have a legitimate chance to even the series. If not, the pressure on the rotation will only continue to mount.
