Carrie, a trailblazer and an inspiring figure, was the first Miss North Carolina to attend a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). A Seattle native, she was crowned Miss North Carolina in June 2024 during her sophomore year at North Carolina Central University (NCCU).

Her journey was defined by her passion for empowerment and service, using her platform to inspire others, particularly young women, to pursue their dreams regardless of the obstacles they might face. As she famously stated, “I can be the first but not the last,” encouraging young women from across the state and the nation to attend HBCUs and take advantage of the opportunities before them.

Despite the difficulties she faced after being diagnosed with metastatic signet ring cell carcinoma in July 2025 while visiting family in Seattle, Carrie remained resolute. She was determined to give a voice to others, saying, “This is happening for a reason, and God has allowed me to use my voice to give a voice to others.” Even as she underwent chemotherapy and other treatments, her spirit remained unshaken. Carrie’s life was one of purpose, and she continued to inspire those around her with her unrelenting positivity and dedication to her mission of advocacy and change.

Carrie’s impact extended far beyond her pageant success. Her commitment to social justice was evident as she used her platform to promote access to education and professional opportunities for students at HBCUs. She encouraged minority and socially marginalized students to set ambitious goals and focus on personal development, leaving behind a legacy of empowerment and hope.

During her reign as Miss North Carolina, she competed in the Miss America competition, where she was also a preliminary talent winner. However, it was her voice, both on and off the stage, that truly made her stand out. Carrie’s heartfelt messages about equality, opportunity, and the importance of education resonated with all who had the privilege of listening to her.

In addition to the Miss North Carolina organization, NCCU also paid tribute to Carrie. The university expressed its deep sorrow, remembering her as a talented and vibrant student whose presence enriched the Eagle community. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Carrie Everett, most recently a sophomore music major at North Carolina Central University, whose voice, talent, and presence touched the heart of our Eagle community,” the university said in a statement.
