“Our journey started just like any other. My husband and I were so excited when we found out we were expecting baby number eight. We have a blended family, three children each from a previous relationship, and then two together. We were so thrilled to be adding a final member to our big and wild family. The pregnancy seemed to be going well, with just the usual morning sickness and a bit of discomfort, but we never expected what was to come.

At 20 weeks, everything seemed normal, but by 21 weeks, we started to notice some complications. I was monitored closely due to my history of premature births. My doctors were particularly cautious since I had already experienced premature births at 33, 35, and 31 weeks. As we reached the 22-week mark, the situation started to worsen. I had bleeding, and my cervix was not holding up. This was a crucial time because we were told that if the baby were born, she wouldn’t survive. That was the moment we understood the severity of the situation. My heart sank. It felt like the world was crumbling around us.

By 23 weeks, I was advised to stay in the hospital, and the decision was made to insert a stitch to hold the pregnancy. This would help keep the baby inside as long as possible. Bed rest became my new reality, and I spent the next several weeks lying down, getting monitored multiple times a day. It was exhausting and scary, but I kept praying for our little one. I was given steroids to help the baby’s lung development in case she was born too early, and we were told to prepare for the worst.

At 25 weeks, I had a routine ultrasound, and the news was not good. It seemed our baby’s chances of survival were slim, but we continued to hold out hope. The doctors advised me to stay calm and take things one day at a time. Every day was filled with uncertainty. I was told that we had to make it to 26 weeks before anything could be done to help. So, every day I prayed and waited, hoping that our little girl would be strong enough to make it to 26 weeks.

At 25+3 weeks, my worst fears came true. My water broke at home. There was nothing we could do at that point. I was rushed to the hospital immediately, and within a few days, I started to have contractions. The doctors decided it was time to deliver our baby girl. We were told it was a race to get her out while she was still healthy enough to survive. I was terrified. Would she survive? Would she be okay?

On the 24th of February, 2020, my little girl Scout entered the world. She was born weighing only 495 grams, just over a pound. She was so small and fragile, but she was alive. It was both the happiest and scariest moment of my life. I didn’t hear her cry at first, but she opened her eyes, and she started to breathe. They immediately took her to the NICU, and we were told she would be closely monitored.

Scout’s journey in NICU was full of ups and downs. She struggled with breathing at first and had to be put on CPAP for help. She was on a ventilator for several weeks and received multiple blood transfusions. During her NICU stay, she had a PDA (patent ductus arteriosus) that caused additional complications. Despite these challenges, she kept improving, bit by bit. Her body was so tiny, but she had such a strong fighting spirit. We were told it would be months before we could take her home, but every day, we celebrated the small victories.

After 12 weeks in NICU, Scout was finally strong enough to be transferred to a special care unit. It felt surreal to be able to hold her in my arms and nurse her after everything we had been through. She was gaining weight, her breathing improved, and she started to thrive. There were still many hurdles, but we could finally see a light at the end of the tunnel.

After spending another few weeks in the special care unit, we were finally able to take Scout home. It was the best day of our lives. We had been through so much, and finally, our little girl was coming home with us. It was bittersweet to leave the NICU, as we had become so close to the nurses and doctors who had taken care of her, but it was time for Scout to be with her family.

Now, at 8 months old, Scout is a happy, healthy little girl. She’s hitting all her milestones and is growing stronger every day. Looking back at everything we went through, I can’t believe how far she’s come. There were times when I didn’t know if she would survive, but she proved everyone wrong. She’s truly a miracle.

The support we received from the Miracle Babies Foundation was invaluable. The volunteers, like Anne Marie, were there for us when we needed someone to talk to. They made a difficult time much more bearable, and for that, I will always be grateful. Scout’s story is one of hope and resilience, and I hope it inspires other families going through similar challenges. We are so incredibly blessed to have our little fighter in our lives. Our journey has been long and difficult, but it has been filled with love, hope, and the strength of our little miracle.”
