Left-Handed Dilemma: Tristan Peters Rests Against Southpaw as Sox Search for Lineup Balance .v1

CHICAGO — One of the most glaring absences from Tuesday’s starting lineup was Tristan Peters, the Opening Day hero who has become a cult favorite on the South Side. With Baltimore starting left-hander Trevor Rogers, Will Venable opted to sit Peters in favor of a right-handed heavy alignment—a move that highlights the “Left-Handed Dilemma” currently facing the 2026 Sox.

Peters, who has been a spark plug in the leadoff spot, currently sports a .269 average but has struggled in his limited looks against elite southpaws. With Austin Hays (hamstring) and Everson Pereira (ankle) both landing on the 10-day Injured List this week, the Sox are suddenly thin in the outfield, forcing Venable into difficult tactical choices.

The loss of Hays and Pereira cannot be overstated. Hays was expected to be the primary “lefty-killer” in the lineup, while Pereira’s speed provided a dynamic element on the basepaths. Without them, the burden of production against left-handed pitching falls on Tanner Murray, who was recalled from Charlotte, and Luisangel Acuña.

“Tristan is a big part of what we do, but we have to be smart about matchups,” Venable explained. “We’re searching for that balance. Right now, losing Austin and Everson hurts our flexibility. We need guys to step up and prove they can hit regardless of which hand the pitcher throws with.”

Peters is expected to return to the lineup for Wednesday’s series finale, but the “Dilemma” remains. Until the Sox can find a consistent right-handed threat to complement the left-handed trio of Murakami, Montgomery, and Peters, opposing managers will continue to use the “Lefty Strategy” to neutralize Chicago’s biggest bats.
