WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has officially drawn a line in the sand, setting the stage for his first significant leadership test since taking the gavel. Thune announced that the Senate will move to a high-profile floor fight next week over the SAVE America Act, a cornerstone Republican election bill that would mandate documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for federal voter registration and require a photo ID to cast a ballot.

The move is designed to force a “full and robust” debate on election integrity, a move that President Donald Trump recently endorsed on Truth Social, calling for the use of the “Talking Filibuster” to put Democrats on the record.

Thune’s decision to bring the SAVE Act to the floor is seen as a strategic win for the MAGA wing of the party, which has long urged the restoration of the “talking filibuster.” This tactic would force Senate Democrats to remain on the floor and speak continuously if they wish to block the measure under the chamber’s 60-vote rule.
