In May of this year, Hayley and Mike welcomed their beautiful daughter Isla into the world. What was supposed to be a joyous and straightforward event, having reached full term at 41+3 weeks, quickly turned into an overwhelming journey neither of them could have anticipated. Their excitement about the arrival of their baby was soon overshadowed by the unexpected, leaving them with a sense of helplessness and uncertainty they never imagined they would face.
Hayley’s pregnancy had been smooth, with no complications, and everything seemed to be progressing as it should. There were no signs of trouble, and the couple was eager to bring their little one into the world. However, Isla’s birth was anything but ordinary.
What began as a long labor, stretching over 72 hours from induction to an emergency forceps delivery, left Isla exhausted, and the difficulties became painfully clear right from the start. Her cries, her high temperature, and low Apgar scores were all alarming signals, compounded by the possibility of meconium aspiration. Without hesitation, Isla was whisked away to the NICU team at Dunedin Hospital.
On her second day in the NICU, a terrifying twist took place. Isla started having seizures, and the team moved quickly to treat her for all possible causes, including severe infections such as meningitis and sepsis.
Every parent’s nightmare was unfolding, and they were left in a state of shock, watching helplessly as their baby fought for her life. They had no idea what was causing Isla’s condition, but the medical team was diligent and quick to begin tests to uncover the root of her symptoms.
The week that followed brought a whirlwind of tests. A head ultrasound and an MRI eventually confirmed what the doctors feared: Isla had suffered a stroke and a brain bleed, most likely during or shortly before her birth. The news was devastating.
The couple’s joy had been replaced by a feeling of helplessness as they were told that Isla’s birth, which had been so eagerly anticipated, would forever be marked by a traumatic start. This unexpected news created a difficult reality for Hayley and Mike, who had imagined this time to be filled with simple joys, not hospital rooms and anxious waiting.
For ten long days, they remained in their NICU “bubble.” Surrounded by an incredible team of doctors, nurses, midwives, specialists, and family, they held onto each other and their baby, feeling both the weight of fear and the comfort of the care Isla was receiving.
They were in the best place possible, receiving expert care, but the pain of missing those precious first moments with their newborn was undeniable. Every moment with their daughter had become a moment of medical concern, each milestone once hoped for now clouded by uncertainty and fear.
However, despite the grim circumstances, Isla continued to show signs of hope. After ten days, the family was finally able to go home in early June, bringing their new baby home as a family of three. The relief was immense, but the road ahead was unknown, and the scars of those first days would remain with them as a reminder of the fragility of life.
Five months later, Isla’s transformation was nothing short of remarkable. From the baby who had been so fragile and in need of constant medical care, Isla had blossomed into a thriving, giggly little girl.
She had met all of her milestones, showing her resilience and strength every step of the way. It was hard to believe that just months ago, Isla had been struggling for her life in the NICU. To see her now, full of life and laughter, was a testament to her strength and the remarkable medical care she had received.
The support that Hayley and Mike had received during Isla’s difficult start didn’t end when they left the NICU. Thanks to the Vera Hayward programme and NICU outreach, Isla and her parents continued to receive the reassurance and support they needed.
As first-time parents, this ongoing care was invaluable. It provided them with peace of mind and the knowledge that they were not alone in Isla’s journey of growth and development. It was an incredible relief, knowing that Isla was being monitored and supported as she continued to grow and thrive.
The gratitude that Hayley and Mike feel for the NICU team and everyone who supported them during those early, difficult days is immeasurable. Without the care, love, and commitment of the doctors, nurses, and specialists, Isla’s journey could have been very different. The couple knows that Isla’s health and her incredible progress are the direct result of the expertise and dedication of her caregivers.
As Isla continues to grow, Hayley and Mike are filled with gratitude, not only for the medical support they have received but also for the love and care shown to their little girl. Isla’s journey has opened their eyes to the world of the NICU, a place that many never see but where miracles happen every day.
Their story is a reminder of the incredible strength of both babies and the people who care for them. It’s a journey that no parent ever hopes to experience, but one that will stay with them forever, filled with both fear and hope, pain and gratitude.
