Sia Schoeman’s journey began in May 2021 when, at just four years old, she started complaining of pain in her leg. This led her parents to seek medical attention, and they soon discovered a swelling in her lower left leg, prompting further investigation. After a series of X-rays and blood tests, which came back normal, her parents took matters into their own hands, seeking the opinion of a private doctor.
It wasn’t until the family sought an expedited MRI that the terrifying reality of Sia’s condition began to unfold. After undergoing the MRI under general anesthesia, the family received the news no one ever wants to hear: their daughter had a tumor, and it was diagnosed as rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
Rhabdomyosarcoma, which primarily affects muscle tissue, was not what doctors initially suspected. They had originally thought it was lymphoma, a diagnosis that, while serious, comes with more treatment options. However, the news that it was rhabdomyosarcoma was a devastating blow, and Sia’s parents were forced to make difficult decisions about her care.
From the moment of diagnosis, Sia’s life took a dramatic turn. She was admitted to the oncology ward, where she began her chemotherapy treatment, starting with IVADo, a powerful chemotherapy regimen. But Sia’s treatment was not without its challenges. The side effects of the chemotherapy were severe, and she struggled with mucositis, a painful inflammation of the mucous membranes, as well as other infections like herpes and thrush.
Despite these hurdles, Sia’s strength and determination never wavered. She continued to fight, with the support of her loving family and the dedicated medical team at the hospital. Every day, Sia’s parents watched their little girl face challenges head-on, showing incredible resilience despite the harsh treatments she endured.
During the months of chemotherapy, Sia’s family also had to face the reality of her condition’s progression. While she initially responded well to treatment and even managed to start school, by December 2021, it became clear that the cancer had stopped responding to the first round of chemotherapy. The primary tumor on her leg began to grow again, signaling the end of the initial treatment.
Sia’s family then began a second round of chemotherapy, hoping it would bring better results. At first, it seemed like she was improving. Her mood lifted, and her mobility began to improve. However, the joy was short-lived, as new tumors began to appear, and Sia’s health continued to decline in early January 2022.
In mid-January, Sia’s condition worsened dramatically. She started experiencing severe headaches and vomiting, symptoms that eventually led to a devastating diagnosis. A CT scan revealed that the cancer had mutated and was spreading to her brain, causing a buildup of fluid and pressure in her ventricles. This condition, along with the rapid progression of her cancer, left Sia with very few options.
On January 26, 2022, Sia’s parents were given the heartbreaking news that there were no further treatment options available for her. She had just days left to live. Despite the doctors’ efforts, the cancer had spread too aggressively, and Sia passed away on February 4, 2022, just 12 days before her 5th birthday.
Sia’s story is one of unimaginable pain, loss, and love. Despite her brief life, she made a profound impact on everyone who knew her. Her courage, her strength, and the love her family had for her are what define her legacy.
Raising Awareness and Calling for Change
Sia’s parents, devastated by their loss, now speak out about the need for greater awareness of childhood cancer symptoms and the importance of early diagnosis. “We would like to see greater awareness of symptoms to look out for, both for parents and GPs,” says her mother. They believe that quicker diagnoses could alleviate the trauma and help families avoid the delays that complicate treatment.
Additionally, Sia’s family advocates for faster access to MRI scans, especially under general anesthesia, as delays in obtaining scans contributed to the time it took to get an accurate diagnosis. While they know that a quicker diagnosis would not have changed the outcome for Sia, they believe it would have reduced the emotional trauma experienced by families going through the process.
In addition to raising awareness, Sia’s family has been active in fundraising for research into rhabdomyosarcoma and better treatments for children diagnosed with the disease. Through their fundraising efforts, they hope to make a difference for future patients and to honor Sia’s memory by supporting vital cancer research.
The Importance of Research and Hope for the Future
Sia’s family, while mourning their loss, has channeled their grief into supporting the cause of childhood cancer research. They have joined forces with organizations like Alice’s Arc, which is dedicated to finding a cure for rhabdomyosarcoma and improving treatments for future patients. Their efforts are driven by the hope that no other child and family will have to face what they did.
Sia’s story, while heartbreaking, serves as a reminder of the importance of funding cancer research and providing families with the resources they need. Through continued research and awareness efforts, there is hope for better treatments, quicker diagnoses, and, ultimately, a cure for rhabdomyosarcoma.
The legacy of Sia’s courage and the love of her family continue to inspire those who fight for a better future for children diagnosed with cancer. Their advocacy, combined with their grief, fuels a passion for change that can make a difference in the lives of others.
