For little Betts, her bond with her older sister, Margaret, is already one of strength and unwavering support. At birth, Betts’ condition was so serious that she required the highest level of life support available. She was placed on ECMO, a machine that provides life-sustaining support for those whose organs aren’t functioning properly.
For 10 long days, Betts fought for her life, her family by her side every step of the way. Those days were filled with uncertainty and fear, but through it all, Betts showed her strength. She was determined to survive, and her family was determined to make sure she had every chance to do so.
The NICU team at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta was essential in Betts’ recovery. Their expertise and dedication made all the difference. They worked tirelessly to ensure that Betts received the best care possible, and their efforts didn’t go unnoticed. With each passing day, Betts grew stronger. Her body, once fragile, began to heal, and the glimmer of hope that had once seemed so distant became a reality.
Now, just months later, Betts is well on her way to making a full recovery. Thanks to the unwavering support of her medical team, she is no longer on ECMO and is steadily gaining strength. But Betts’ journey is not over yet.
At around her first birthday, she will return to Children’s for a surgery to close her omphalocele, a procedure that will be led by Dr. Matthew Clifton, the Division Chief of Pediatric Surgery. It is a crucial step in Betts’ recovery, one that will bring her closer to living a healthy, full life.
For Betts’ family, this journey has been filled with emotion, strength, and the promise of a bright future. Her older sister, Margaret, has been an unwavering source of love and support.
