Thirteen years ago, Tysie’s life changed forever when her younger brother, Kason, was involved in a tragic motor vehicle accident. On April 28, 2012, when Kason was just 2 ½ years old, he sustained a traumatic brain injury that would alter the course of his life. After the accident, Kason was flown to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery to repair a skull fracture, marking the beginning of a long and challenging road to recovery.
The accident left Kason without use of his right side, a devastating consequence for such a young child. But despite the severity of his injury, Kason’s resilience and the expert care he received at Nationwide Children’s Hospital became the foundation for his recovery. After stabilizing, Kason was transferred to the Inpatient Rehab Unit, where he began the intensive therapy that would help him regain the ability to walk, eat, and dress himself once again.
Tysie, who was only 5 years old at the time of the accident, recalls the experience vividly. She watched her brother go through months of grueling therapy, and it was in that time that she witnessed the dedication of the medical team.
“In that month, they taught Kason to walk again and how to feed and dress himself again,” Tysie remembers. “The amazing staff never stopped working to help him regain function.” The care Kason received at Nationwide Children’s Hospital not only saved his life but also gave him the tools to reclaim his independence.
Now, as a senior in high school, Tysie has not forgotten the life-changing care her brother received. To show her gratitude, she decided to give back to the hospital and the staff who helped Kason regain so much of what was lost that day.
Through her National Honor Society Service Project, Tysie raised funds to donate to the hospital, hoping to support the Inpatient Rehab Unit that played such a pivotal role in Kason’s recovery. “This is just a small token to show appreciation for how grateful I am for all that was done for my brother,” Tysie shared.
Kason, now 15 years old, is thriving despite the challenges he continues to face. He plays basketball and runs track, demonstrating just how far he has come since that fateful day.
While his life has not been without struggles, Kason’s determination and the support of his family, along with the heroes at Nationwide Children’s, have helped him overcome obstacles that once seemed insurmountable. “His life doesn’t come without struggles, but I know he would never be where he is today without the amazing heroes at Nationwide Children’s, especially the Inpatient Rehab Unit,” Tysie said with pride.
Today, Kason’s journey serves as a testament to the incredible care and dedication that families receive at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. His recovery is a story of hope, resilience, and the unwavering support of a family who never gave up on him. Tysie’s heartfelt donation and her recognition of the hospital’s role in her brother’s recovery highlight the profound impact that compassionate care can have on a family’s life.
