U.S. and Israel Escalate Strikes on Iran, Targeting Mehrabad Airport

Strikes on Mehrabad International Airport

A primary target of the weekend’s operations was Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport, which serves as a major transportation and logistical node.

Aircraft Destroyed: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported the destruction of 16 aircraft at the facility following a wave of targeted strikes.

IRGC Operations: According to the IDF, these aircraft were operated by the Quds Force—the elite overseas branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)—and were actively used as a central hub to transport weapons and funds to regional proxy groups, including Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Additional Targets: The strikes also targeted several Iranian fighter jets stationed at the airport, which allied forces stated posed a direct threat to Israeli and American aircraft operating in Iranian airspace.

Escalating Rhetoric from Washington

The military actions coincided with severe warnings from the U.S. administration. President Donald Trump took to the Truth Social platform on Saturday to declare that Iran would face severe consequences for its continued resistance.

“Today Iran will be hit very hard!” the President wrote, adding that “complete destruction and certain death” are under serious consideration for “areas and groups of people that were not considered for targeting up until this moment in time.”

Internal Iranian Dynamics and Regional Retaliation

Despite the heavy bombardments and infrastructure damage, Iran has continued to launch retaliatory drone and missile strikes against neighboring nations hosting U.S. military bases. However, mixed signals are emerging from Tehran’s leadership regarding the continuation of the conflict:

Presidential Apology: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian issued a public apology to neighboring Gulf states for the cross-border strikes. He indicated that Tehran would stop targeting those countries provided they do not facilitate attacks against Iran from their soil.

Command and Control Questions: The fact that ordnance continues to be fired across the region despite the President’s public de-escalation attempts has led defense analysts to question the cohesion of Iran’s command structure. Observers suggest that the country’s political leadership may no longer have full command over the IRGC, which traditionally oversees the nation’s ballistic missile arsenal and proxy network.

Military analysts note that the campaign has turned into a war of attrition. As the IRGC steadily depletes its drone and missile inventories through continued regional strikes, the U.S. and its allies are actively targeting the remaining stockpiles while leveraging their own accelerated munitions production.
