From the moment she entered the world, Samara’s heart was destined to work harder than most. Diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), a rare and severe congenital heart defect, Samara was born with the left side of her heart underdeveloped, a condition that would challenge her every step of the way. Yet, from day one, Samara proved to be a fighter—her strength and resilience inspiring everyone around her.
HLHS is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate and ongoing care, and for Samara, her journey began just three days after birth. At such a young age, she underwent the first of many surgeries—a Norwood procedure, designed to help her heart function despite its severe limitations. The procedure was only the beginning of a long and difficult road, one filled with uncertainty and the constant challenge of overcoming obstacles that no child should ever have to face.
Over the years, Samara’s journey has been marked by numerous setbacks. Infections, respiratory failure, and a short time on ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), the highest level of life support, were just a few of the challenges Samara had to endure.
But despite the obstacles, Samara’s determination never wavered. Each challenge she faced only reinforced her strength and perseverance, teaching her family and caregivers that there was nothing she couldn’t overcome with the right care and support.
At eight months old, Samara underwent her second surgery, the Glenn procedure, which is another crucial step in the treatment of HLHS. This procedure allowed her to grow stronger and marked a turning point in her recovery. After the surgery, Samara was able to breathe a little easier and her heart was able to function more effectively. Her journey was far from over, but the progress she made during this time was nothing short of remarkable.
Throughout her recovery, Samara’s family remained by her side, finding comfort and strength in every small victory. The emotional support they received from the medical team at the Heart Center was invaluable.
They were not only her caregivers—they became a family that Samara could rely on. The bond between Samara, her parents, and the medical team has been the foundation of her incredible recovery. Now, Samara is back home and thriving. Full of joy and energy, she continues to grow stronger every day. With each passing month, her smile gets brighter and her steps grow more confident. As Samara prepares for her third and final procedure, the Fontan procedure, her family looks ahead to the next chapter in her journey. While the Fontan procedure is a critical step in her recovery, it’s not just about the surgery—it’s about the life that Samara has ahead of her.
