Kix Thomas was born with a heart that defied expectations from the very beginning. What was initially suspected to be Tetralogy of Fallot, a congenital heart defect, turned out to be a much more complex condition: Truncus Arteriosus. The news was not just a diagnosis; it was a life-changing revelation. From the moment we learned of Kix’s condition during the 20-week anatomy scan, our lives were altered forever. What should have been a joyful anticipation of welcoming our baby boy turned into a journey filled with uncertainty, fear, and overwhelming challenges. But one thing became clear—Kix was a fighter, and we had to stay strong for him.
The Diagnosis: A Shocking Revelation
During that anatomy scan, the doctors first suspected Tetralogy of Fallot, a congenital heart defect that involves four heart abnormalities. But as soon as Kix was born, we learned the truth: he had Truncus Arteriosus, a rare and complex condition where the two main arteries leaving the heart are not properly separated. This meant that his heart could not properly send blood to his lungs and body in the way it needed to, putting his life in immediate danger.
Hearing this diagnosis was a blow. As parents, you never imagine that your child will have to face such a battle. But in that moment, we knew we had to stay strong. We had to believe in Kix, in his ability to fight. Even though the road ahead seemed impossibly difficult, Kix’s strength became the driving force for our entire family. We were no longer just parents—we were warriors, fighting alongside our son for every breath, every moment.
The Decision: Choosing a Path Less Traveled
With Truncus Arteriosus came an inevitable surgery. The decision was not an easy one. We were faced with two options: the normal conduit procedure, which is commonly used to correct heart defects like Kix’s, or something more experimental—a partial heart transplant.
After speaking with Dr. Turek at Duke University, we learned that Kix had severe regurgitation, which meant that the conduit procedure might require multiple surgeries as he grew. The idea of Kix undergoing repeated surgeries throughout his life weighed heavily on us. We knew that this would be a long-term battle. But then, Dr. Turek introduced us to a groundbreaking procedure—a partial heart transplant. This innovative approach involved using valves from a donor heart to help Kix’s heart function better and more efficiently. If successful, this procedure would mean that Kix wouldn’t need any more surgeries in the future.
We made the difficult decision to move forward with the partial heart transplant. Kix became the second baby in the world to undergo this procedure, and we hoped this would be the key to giving him the best possible future—a life free of constant surgeries and hospital visits. Looking back, it was a decision we would never regret. It was a chance for Kix to live a life with fewer obstacles, fewer hospital stays, and more possibilities.
The Surgery: A Lifesaving Procedure
At just 16 days old, Kix underwent the partial heart transplant and a VSD closure. The surgeons took a pulmonary valve from a donor heart and turned his truncal valve into his aortic valve. It was an incredibly complex surgery—one that would give Kix a chance at a healthier future.
When the surgery was over, we could hardly breathe. It was only after the procedure that we truly understood the depth of Kix’s warrior spirit. He fought through every challenge, even when things didn’t go as planned. The road ahead wasn’t going to be easy, but we had made the decision to fight with him every step of the way.
The Struggles: A Series of Setbacks
While the surgery was successful, the challenges didn’t end there. Just weeks after the heart surgery, Kix had another surgery to move two arteries that were pressing on his trachea. This was necessary to prevent his airway from being compromised. But even this simple procedure added another layer of complexity to his delicate condition.
As if that weren’t enough, Kix developed a staff infection. The infection led to three surgical washouts, something no parent expects to endure while watching their baby fight for life. But Kix’s strength and resilience never faltered. With every setback, Kix continued to show us just how powerful his spirit was. He kept fighting, he kept surprising us, and he kept winning.
But the challenges didn’t stop there. Due to several failed extubation attempts caused by bronchomalacia, a condition that weakened Kix’s airway, he needed a tracheotomy. This procedure allowed him to breathe more easily, but it was another reminder of just how much Kix had already endured.
Alongside all of this, Kix underwent G-tube surgery and diaphragm plication. These were necessary to help him feed and breathe properly. His tiny body had already been through so much, but he never gave up. His resilience left us in awe.
Additional Challenges: DiGeorge Syndrome and One Kidney
On top of his heart condition, Kix also has DiGeorge syndrome, a genetic disorder that leads to immune deficiencies and developmental delays. To add to this already complicated mix, Kix has only one kidney. This added another layer of complexity to his medical care and increased the risks he faced.
Despite all of these challenges, Kix has continued to defy expectations. His determination and will to live have been a source of inspiration to everyone around him. His love for life, his infectious smile, and his fighting spirit have kept us all going. No matter how many procedures or setbacks Kix faced, he continued to show us that he was a true warrior.
The Road Ahead: A Warrior’s Legacy
Kix has now spent 5.5 months in the hospital, fighting through every obstacle, and emerging stronger with each passing day. His journey is far from over, but the strength he has shown so far has been nothing short of extraordinary. His story is one of love, strength, and unwavering resilience, and we are so incredibly proud of how far he has come.
As parents, we’ve learned so much from Kix. He’s taught us what it truly means to be strong and to never give up. He’s shown us how to find joy in the smallest moments and to appreciate life in ways we never thought possible. Kix’s fight isn’t over, but no matter what comes next, we know he will continue to show the world the incredible power of a warrior’s spirit.
